RMU Softball Set for Six-Game Week

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU softball team is gearing up for a busy stretch with six games on the schedule this week. The Colonials will begin with a single game at James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va., on Thursday, Feb. 27, at 4:00 p.m. before traveling to Salem, Va., for the Hokie Classic from Feb. 28 to March 2.
 
At the tournament, RMU will open play on Friday against Penn State at 10:00 a.m., followed by a rematch with JMU at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday, the Colonials will take on Bucknell at 10:00 a.m. and Villanova at 12:30 p.m. before closing out the tournament on Sunday with a second meeting against Bucknell at 12:30 p.m. All tournament games will be held at the Moyer Sports Complex, with live video and live stats available.
 
RMU LATELY
RMU enters the week with a 2-0 record after winning both games at the Gardner-Webb Tournament two weeks ago. The Colonials secured a 9-5 victory over Iona and a 1-0 shutout against Sacred Heart. Senior Anna Resnik and junior Madelyn Coleman were both recognized by the Horizon League as Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Resnik delivered three hits, three RBI, and a double, while Coleman tossed 5.1 scoreless innings, striking out a career-high nine batters against Sacred Heart.
 
Also making an impact, Courtney Poulich and Kaylyn Hopf each registered three hits, while Hopf and Jess Matheny added two doubles apiece. Poulich and Resnik currently lead the team with a .571 on-base percentage. In the circle, sophomore Kaitlyn Molitoris earned her first save of the season.
 
MILESTONE WATCH
Several Colonials are closing in on career milestones. Anna Resnik has appeared in 148 career games, just two shy of reaching 150, and is seven RBI away from 50. Logan Black and Kaylyn Hopf each sit at 44 career hits, approaching the 50-hit mark. Senior Madison DeVault, who has logged 217.1 career innings, is just 11 strikeouts away from 200. Senior Alaina Koutsogiani has also started and played in 148 career games, needing just two more to hit 150.
 
ALL-TIME HISTORY VS. OPPONENTS
RMU has limited history against its upcoming opponents. The Colonials are 1-3 all-time against James Madison, with their lone victory coming in 2003. Against Penn State, RMU holds a 7-9 record dating back to 1991, averaging 3.25 runs per game in those matchups. The Colonials have faced Bucknell five times, with their only win coming in 2014, and have met Villanova three times, winning the most recent matchup in 2014 in extra innings, 1-0 in eight.
 
SCOUTING THE DUKES
James Madison enters the week with a 2-7 record after competing in tournaments in Florida and Alabama. Graduate outfielder Kylee Gleason leads the team in batting average at .368, while senior Abbie Campbell boasts a team-high 1.006 OPS, four doubles, and a .480 on-base percentage. Sophomore Madison Edwards leads the team with two home runs. Freshman pitcher Madalyn Johnson has thrown 22.2 innings, recording 24 strikeouts with a 4.01 ERA.
 
SCOUTING THE NITTANY LIONS
Penn State, currently 5-9 on the season, has been led offensively by sophomore Brooke Klosowicz, who leads the team in batting average (.462), hits (18), doubles (6), and RBI (10), among other categories. In the circle, Mady Volpe and Lydia Spalding each have two wins, while Abigail Britton has posted a team-high 22 strikeouts and one save.
 
SCOUTING THE BISON
Bucknell, sitting at 3-5, is paced by sophomore Shea Malone, who holds a team-best .417 batting average and 10 hits. Senior MaKenzie Hilling leads the Bison in doubles (4) and walks (5), while sophomore Brooke Popella has driven in nine runs. Senior Madison Roukey has logged the most innings for Bucknell at 26.2, striking out 19 batters.
 
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Villanova, which has started the season 5-8, has been powered by sophomore Maranda Runco, who owns a team-best 1.094 OPS, a .382 batting average, 13 hits, and 12 RBI. Senior Kelsey White leads the Wildcats with four doubles and three home runs. In the circle, freshman Lexi Kobryn has pitched 33.2 innings with three wins, two shutouts, and a 2.29 ERA, while junior Kat Gallant has logged 30.1 innings and earned the team's lone save.
 
UP NEXT
Following the Hokie Classic, RMU will travel to Nashville, Tenn., next week for a pair of doubleheaders. The Colonials will face Lipscomb on Friday, March 7, before taking on Belmont on Saturday, March 8.
