Colonials Split on Day Two of Hokie Classic

Poulich makes program history with three home runs in one game; Resnik records career-high five RBI

SALEM, Va. – The RMU softball team delivered an explosive offensive performance in game one of Saturday's doubleheader, defeating Bucknell 16-6. The momentum shifted into game two, as the Colonials fell 9-0 to Villanova on day two of the Hokie Classic. RMU now holds a 3-4 record in the 2025 season.

GAME 1: RMU 16, Bucknell 6
After a scoreless first inning, Bucknell struck first in the second with a two-run home run. RMU quickly responded in the third when Logan Black walked, followed by singles from Sequoia Dunlap and Kaylyn Hopf to load the bases. Anna Resnik then doubled to right field, driving in two runs to tie the game.

Moments later, Courtney Poulich launched her first home run of the day, a three-run shot, giving RMU a 5-2 advantage. Bucknell answered in the fourth with a surge of their own, tallying five consecutive hits, including another two-run homer, reclaiming the lead at 6-5.

The fifth inning belonged to RMU. The Colonials erupted for 11 runs, beginning with Hopf's single and stolen base, setting up Resnik's RBI single to even the score. Poulich then stepped up and crushed her second three-run homer of the game, putting RMU ahead 9-6.

The offense kept rolling with key RBI hits from Katlyn Jardine, Dunlap, Hopf, and Koutsogiani. Resnik followed with a two-run blast to center field. Poulich capped off the record-setting inning with her third home run of the game—a solo shot to center—securing the 16-6 win.

With the run rule in effect, Kaitlyn Molitoris closed out the game in the circle, securing her first win of the season.

BY THE NUMBERS
RMU outhit Bucknell 16-10, stranding just one runner compared to Bucknell's five. Hopf, Resnik, and Poulich each recorded three hits and three runs. Poulich finished with seven RBI, tying a single-game program record, while Resnik added a career-high five RBI. Logan Black drew the team's only walk. In the circle, Sammie Borrayo pitched 3.1 innings, with Kailani Tatro contributing before Molitoris closed out the win.

MAKING HISTORY
  • Most Runs in 15 Years – RMU's 16-run outburst was the program's highest since a 17-1 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in 2010. Their 16 hits were the most in a game since a matchup against Georgia State last season in February, where RMU posted 18 hits.
  • Poulich's Record-Breaking Day – Junior Courtney Poulich made RMU history, becoming the first Colonial to hit three home runs in a single game. Her seven RBI tied a program record, matching marks set by Olivia Lorusso (2016) and Kali Byers (2005). She now leads RMU in batting average (.471), home runs (3), RBI (8), slugging percentage (1.059), and on-base percentage (.571). Dating back to last season in the Horizon League Championship, she's hit five home runs in her last 11 games.
  • Resnik's Two-Way Impact – Known for her defensive prowess, senior Anna Resnik had one of the best offensive performances of her career, driving in five runs. All-time, this was her fifth game with 3+ RBI. She now sits just two RBI shy of 50 for her career.

GAME 2: RMU 0, Villanova 9
RMU's offense cooled off in game two, as Villanova struck early and never looked back. The Wildcats took a commanding 7-0 lead in the second inning, fueled by a two-run homer, a grand slam, and a bases-loaded walk. They added a run in the third with an RBI triple before capping off their scoring with a solo home run in the fourth.

The Colonials had a few offensive highlights, including Hopf reaching scoring position in the fourth and freshman Mary Brant hitting her first career triple in the fifth, but they were unable to push any runs across.

BY THE NUMBERS
Villanova outhit RMU 12-2, leaving four runners on base compared to RMU's two. Junior Madelyn Coleman started in the circle, striking out three batters over 1.1 innings, while Jaimee Hardy provided relief, recording five strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
