GREEN BAY, Wis. – RMU softball capped off a dominant weekend with a hard-fought 4-3 win over Green Bay in extra innings on Saturday afternoon. Freshman
Mary Brant delivered the game-winning RBI double in the eighth inning to complete the series sweep. With the win, the Colonials improved to 11-9 overall and 5-1 in Horizon League play, extending their win streak to seven games.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On a chilly day in Wisconsin, both teams struggled to generate offense early, with RMU senior pitcher
Madison DeVault setting the tone from the start. DeVault struck out two batters in each of the first four innings and did not allow a hit through five frames, keeping the Phoenix off balance throughout her outing.
Green Bay attempted to spark their offense with three consecutive pinch hitters in the bottom of the fifth, but DeVault shut them down to keep the game scoreless.
In the top of the sixth, RMU finally broke through. With two outs,
Anna Resnik ripped a double and came home on a clutch RBI double from
Courtney Poulich to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead.
The Colonials tacked on two more runs in the seventh.
Alaina Koutsogiani singled to start the inning and stole second.
Jess Matheny drove her in with an RBI hit, and moments later, RMU executed a double steal with
Sequoia Dunlap and Matheny, the latter crossing the plate to make it 3-0.
Green Bay, down to their final outs, rallied to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, sending the contest to extra innings. But RMU didn't flinch. Resnik drew a walk to lead off the top of the eighth, and Brant followed with an RBI double to put the Colonials back in front.
Madelyn Coleman came in to pitch the bottom half and sealed the win with a scoreless frame, recording a strikeout to close out the game and the sweep.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
RMU outhit Green Bay 6-3 and left just six runners on base, while the Phoenix stranded 10. Resnik scored twice to lead the Colonials, with Poulich, Brant, and Matheny each driving in a run. DeVault tossed a no-hitter through five innings, finishing with nine strikeouts—marking the first time in her career she allowed no hits while pitching beyond three innings.
Kaitlyn Molitoris worked two innings in relief with a pair of strikeouts, and Coleman was perfect in the eighth.
