MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Riding a seven-game win streak, the RMU softball team will step out of Horizon League play for a midweek non-conference matchup at Kent State. The Colonials and Golden Flashes are scheduled to face off Tuesday, March 25 at 3:00 PM. The game will stream live on BoxCast.
RMU LATELY
RMU enters the contest with an 11-9 overall record and a 5-1 mark in Horizon League action after a weekend sweep at Green Bay. In game one of the series, the Colonials pulled away late with a pair of seventh-inning RBI singles by
Logan Black and
Kaylyn Hopf, earning a 4-2 victory. The bats came alive in the second game of Friday's doubleheader, as
Mary Brant powered the offense with two home runs and a career-best five RBI in an 8-2 win. The sweep was sealed on Saturday in dramatic fashion. Senior pitcher
Madison DeVault threw five no-hit innings to start the game, and with the score tied 3-3 after seven, Brant came through again with an RBI double in the eighth to lift RMU to a 4-3 win.
Brant has emerged as one of the league's most dangerous hitters, leading the Colonials in nearly every offensive category. The freshman boasts a .373 batting average, a 1.298 OPS, and leads the team in hits (19), doubles (6), triples (3), home runs (5), and slugging percentage (.902). Senior
Courtney Poulich has also been a steady force at the plate with 17 runs, 19 hits, 18 RBI, five home runs, and a .422 on-base percentage. Hopf and
Anna Resnik have chipped in with 19 and 17 hits respectively, with Resnik also scoring 17 runs from the top of the order. In the circle, DeVault continues to anchor the staff. The senior leads RMU with a 3.21 ERA, four wins, and 47 strikeouts this season.
MILESTONE WATCH
Another milestone is in sight for the Colonials, as senior infielder
Alaina Koutsogiani is just four runs shy of reaching 100 in her career. Over four seasons, she has compiled 124 hits and driven in 57 runs.
HOME RUN HITTERS
Offensively, RMU leads the Horizon League in home runs with 21 so far this season. Brant and Poulich have each hit five, pacing the conference. Resnik, Koutsogiani,
Jess Matheny,
Sequoia Dunlap, and
Jaimee Hardy have all contributed two home runs apiece, while
Makayla Jardine has added one. The program's single-season record is 40 home runs, set in 2008.
ALL-TIME VS. KENT STATE
Tuesday's game will mark the 28th all-time meeting between RMU and Kent State, with the Colonials trailing the series 12-14-1. In their most recent matchups last season, RMU swept the Golden Flashes with wins of 5-3 and 4-1. Historically, the Colonials are averaging 3.33 runs per game against Kent State.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN FLASHES
Kent State enters the game with a 7-22 overall record and is currently on a seven-game losing streak. Senior utility player Delaney Robeson has been a bright spot for the Golden Flashes, leading the team with a .385 batting average, 35 hits, three home runs, and 27 RBI. Brynn Libler has added a team-high 21 runs, while Kendal Leitner leads in on-base percentage at .448.
