MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. –
Gia Anthony's game-winning goal with eight seconds left in overtime lifted RMU to a thrilling 11-10 victory over Old Dominion on Wednesday afternoon. The Colonials improve to 3-7 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Monarchs came out strong in the first quarter, taking an early 3-1 lead.
Madison Prietz netted RMU's opening goal—her second of the season—to briefly tie the game at 1-1, but Old Dominion responded with two more goals to hold the advantage after 15 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Monarchs extended their lead to 4-1 before freshman
Vivian LaMange struck for her sixth goal of the season off a feed from
Jenna Irwin. Old Dominion tacked on another goal before halftime, sending RMU into the break trailing 5-2.
RMU flipped the script in the third quarter, shutting out the Monarchs while erupting for six unanswered goals.
Irwin jumpstarted the comeback with her 22nd goal of the season, followed by LaMange's second of the game on an assist from
Olivia Usatch. Over a five-minute stretch,
Mia Berthoff netted three consecutive goals—including a woman-up tally—pushing the Colonials ahead 7-5. LaMange and Anthony each assisted on Berthoff's natural hat trick. With just a minute left in the quarter, Irwin added her second goal of the game, giving RMU an 8-5 lead heading into the final frame.
Old Dominion clawed back in the fourth quarter, opening the period with a goal before Irwin quickly responded to complete her hat trick. The Monarchs then scored back-to-back goals, cutting the deficit to one.
With under five minutes to play, Irwin found the back of the net once more for her fourth goal of the game, but Old Dominion battled back, scoring twice in the closing minutes to send the game into overtime.
After killing off a penalty in the extra frame, the Colonials regained possession and pushed forward. With 38 seconds left,
Samantha Brothers nearly ended the game, but her shot rang off the post. Seconds later, Anthony delivered the dagger, finishing a feed from Berthoff to secure RMU's 11-10 victory.
