MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU softball team put on a productive performance in their final home series of the 2025 regular season, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader against Mercyhurst in commanding fashion at the North Athletic Complex. The Colonials took the opener in five innings, 8-0, and followed with an 11-3 win in six innings to complete the sweep. With the victories, RMU improves to 24-14 overall.
GAME 1: RMU 8, Mercyhurst 0 (5 Innings)
The Colonials wasted little time setting the tone in game one.
Kaylyn Hopf opened the bottom of the first with a leadoff single and quickly stole second, showcasing RMU's aggressive baserunning. After moving to third on a lineout, she darted home on a wild pitch to give RMU an early 1-0 lead.
The second inning saw RMU break things wide open.
Katlyn Jardine and
Logan Black both drew walks, and Hopf followed with a sharp single up the middle, driving in Jardine for a 2-0 lead. That brought
Anna Resnik to the plate, who made no mistake—launching a deep three-run home run over the leftfield wall to extend the lead to 5-0.
RMU continued to add on in the third, when
Alaina Koutsogiani reached on a single, stole second, and eventually came around to score on another wild pitch.
With a 6-0 lead entering the fourth, the Colonials weren't done.
Mary Brant crushed a two-out double to center field, and Koutsogiani reached safely again, this time on a throwing error. Brant scored from second on the miscue, and
Jess Matheny capitalized with a single through the right side, plating Koutsogiani and pushing the margin to 8-0.
That would be all RMU needed, closing the game after five innings via the run rule.

GAME 2: RMU 11, Mercyhurst 3 (6 Innings)
Game two got off to a better start for Mercyhurst as the Lakers took advantage of a couple early hits to jump out to a 3-0 lead across the first two innings. But RMU wasted little time responding—and responded in a big way.
In the bottom of the second,
Jess Matheny and
Lilly Stump both reached base and advanced on steals.
Makayla Jardine stepped in and ripped a single to center, scoring Matheny. Stump scored moments later on a wild pitch.
With the deficit now one, Hopf continued the pressure with another single and steal, setting up Resnik for a sacrifice fly to bring home Jardine and tie the game, 3-3.
The Colonials seized full control in the third. After a leadoff walk and another steal, Stump delivered her first major hit in an RMU uniform, smacking a two-RBI double into right field to give RMU a 5-3 lead. The momentum carried into the next inning.
In the fourth, Hopf singled for the third time in the game and scored when Resnik ripped a double to the gap. Brant walked, Koutsogiani singled, and a passed ball brought in another run. Matheny then delivered the backbreaker—a double to deep right-center that plated two more.
After a Mercyhurst pitching change,
Jaimee Hardy joined the hit parade with an RBI double to left, capping a six-run explosion and giving RMU a 10-3 advantage.
After scoreless fifth innings from both sides, RMU walked it off in the sixth. Koutsogiani was hit by a pitch and stole second. Matheny, who had already driven in two runs, came through again with a well-placed single to drive in the game-ending run and seal the 11-3 run-rule victory.

QUOTABLES FROM HEAD COACH JEXX VARNER
On winning the final home games of the season:
"It's meaningful for sure. We went 11-4 at home this year. It's always a big deal to defend our own house. These seniors left everything out there."
On utilizing the full roster in a non-conference setting:
"The midweek games are always a great opportunity to give more players reps. You never know when you'll need a pinch-hit, pinch-run, or a new arm in a key moment. These games let us work on individual things while still playing to win—and that's what we did today."
UP NEXT
The Colonials will now hit the road for their final Horizon League series of the regular season at Cleveland State, scheduled for April 26-27. RMU enters the weekend in second place in the conference standings and remains in contention for the regular-season title and the right to host the Horizon League Championship.
