Colonials Close Non-Conference Play with a Dominant Win Over Mercyhurst, 17-6

Irwin and Berthoff both with a team-high four goals

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's lacrosse team closed out its non-conference schedule in dominant fashion with a 17-6 win over Mercyhurst on Wednesday afternoon.

The Colonials now head into their regular-season finale on Sunday with a 7-9 overall record and a 4-1 mark in conference play.

FIRST HALF
RMU opened the game strong, scoring two goals within the first four minutes courtesy of Mia Berthoff and Jenna Irwin. Both teams remained scoreless until the 5:28 mark, when Irwin netted her second goal to give the Colonials an early 3-0 lead. Mercyhurst responded with two consecutive goals to close out the quarter.
The second quarter proved to be the turning point, as RMU erupted for six goals while limiting Mercyhurst to just one. Samantha Brothers, Chelsea Coleman, and Madison Prietz each found the back of the net, while Berthoff and Irwin added two goals apiece in the frame. The Colonials matched a season-high with 11 shots on goal and dominated the draw control battle, 6-1. RMU entered halftime with a commanding 9-3 lead.

SECOND HALF
The Colonials showed no signs of slowing down, once again scoring six goals in the third quarter. Coleman, Berthoff, and Irwin each recorded another goal, while Vivian and Eliana LaMange, along with freshman Greta Burns, added to the tally. RMU was a perfect 6-for-6 on shots in the frame, extending their lead to 15-5 heading into the fourth.
With a running clock in effect, the final quarter passed quickly, but RMU still managed to add to its lead. Jade Doldo scored her first goal of the game, and Eliana LaMange netted her second. The Colonials controlled possession, winning the draw control battle 4-0, and capped off their home regular-season schedule with a dominant 17-6 victory.

POSTSEASON SCENARIOS
Following last week's win over Kent State, RMU officially clinched a spot in the 2025 MAC Championships. The Colonials can secure the No. 1 seed and the right to host the tournament with a win on Sunday against Akron. However, a loss introduces a few scenarios:
  • Loss vs. Akron + Central Michigan win = No. 3 seed
  • Loss vs. Akron + Central Michigan loss = No. 1 seed (tiebreakers over Eastern Michigan and head-to-head win over Detroit Mercy)
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Jenna Irwin led the Colonials with four goals and two assists, while also recording a team-high nine draw controls. Mia Berthoff was on fire, scoring four goals on five shots. Chelsea Coleman and Eliana LaMange each added two goals, with Madison Prietz, Samantha Brothers, Vivian LaMange, Jade Doldo, and Greta Burns all contributing one goal apiece.
Prietz also shined defensively, leading the team with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Goalkeeper Sydney Riker earned the win with 13 saves—her second consecutive game with that total. Notably, this marked the first time this season RMU had nine different goal scorers in a single game.

UP NEXT
