4/8/2025 9:00:00 AM

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU softball team hits the road for another Horizon League matchup this week, heading to Youngstown State for a three-game series. The teams will square off in a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 9 at 3:00 PM, with the series finale scheduled for Thursday, April 10 at 3:00 PM. All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

RMU LATELY
The Colonials enter the week at 17-10 overall and 9-2 in Horizon League play, sitting in second place in the conference standings. RMU is coming off a dramatic sweep of Northern Kentucky, where freshman Mary Brant delivered walk-off hits in both games of the doubleheader. Brant went 4-for-8 in the series with three RBI and a double. Centerfielder Jess Matheny also drove in three runs, while Logan Black, Anna Resnik and Courtney Poulich each added one RBI apiece.

In the circle, starters Madison DeVault and Madelyn Coleman set the tone before handing the ball off to Kaitlyn Molitoris, who earned the win in both games. Molitoris threw a combined 4.2 innings, allowing just two runs and striking out five. DeVault continues to lead the team with a 2.94 ERA and 63 strikeouts—her ERA currently ranks second in the conference. Both she and Molitoris have recorded six wins so far this season.

Offensively, Brant leads the team in several categories, including batting average (.390), hits (30), home runs (8), triples (3), OPS (1.317) and slugging percentage (.883). Poulich has also racked up 30 hits and eight home runs, while leading the team in doubles (9), RBI (33), runs scored (28), and on-base percentage (.453).

CONSISTENCY IS KEY
Several Colonials are riding impressive streaks. Brant has a nine-game hit streak, batting .424 with 17 RBI and three home runs during that stretch.

Resnik has reached base safely in 15 straight games—the longest such streak of her career—thanks to seven hits, nine RBI, eight walks and four hit-by-pitches. Across those 15 games, she's posted an on-base percentage of .527.

Poulich has reached base in 13 straight. Over that span, she's registered 18 hits, 22 RBI, seven doubles and four homers with a .472 on-base percentage.

ALL-TIME VS. YSU
RMU and Youngstown State are no strangers to each other, having met 70 times since 1991. It's the second-most frequent matchup in program history, behind only Saint Francis. YSU holds a slight edge in the all-time series at 36-34, but RMU has fared well on the road, posting a 17-13 record in Youngstown. The Colonials have shut out the Penguins nine times and have scored a total of 250 runs in the series, averaging 3.57 per game.

The two teams last met in the 2024 Horizon League playoffs in Youngstown, where RMU earned a 3-1 win. Catalina Saxen crushed a two-run home run while Matheny added a sacrifice fly. Jane Garver earned the win with four innings of work and three strikeouts, while DeVault closed out the game with three scoreless innings to earn the save.

SCOUTING THE PENGUINS
Youngstown State enters the series at 10-28 overall and 2-7 in conference play, currently sitting seventh in the Horizon League. The Penguins are coming off a series loss to Purdue Fort Wayne, dropping two of three games.

Offensively, sophomore infielder Lydia Wilkerson leads the team with a .377 batting average, 46 hits, 22 runs, and is tied for the team lead in home runs and RBI with three and 21, respectively. Junior catcher Kennedy Dean and senior infielder Taylor Truran have also hit three home runs, with Dean contributing a team-high nine doubles. Freshman infielder Ayla Ray leads the team in on-base percentage at .453.

In the circle, freshman Kelsey Ogin has been the most consistent starter, posting a 4.60 ERA with four wins, six complete games, and 57 strikeouts. Sophomore Autumn Behlke has also collected four wins this season.

UP NEXT
After their trip to Youngstown, the Colonials will return to Moon Township for a lengthy eight-game homestand, beginning with a three-game series against Detroit Mercy scheduled for April 12–13.
