MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – RMU Softball Head Coach
Jexx Varner proudly announced today the addition of Maddy Wright to the Colonials' coaching staff as an Assistant Coach.
"I am incredibly grateful for this opportunity and I am so excited to get started with a program that has so much ahead of it," said Wright. "The family culture at RMU is so strong and I can't wait to be a part of it."
Wright, a highly accomplished former NCAA Division I pitcher and two-way player, will primarily work with the team's pitching staff, bringing a wealth of high-level playing and coaching experience to Moon Township.
"I am so pleased to add Maddy to our coaching staff," said Head Coach
Jexx Varner. "From our first phone interview, I knew she would be a great fit for our program, our young women, and the needs of this position. Maddy brings a lot of high-end experience from her playing days at UNC Charlotte and Texas Tech, as well as invaluable working experience with the National Runner-Ups from last season. Her pitching knowledge and two-way experience will not only help our pitchers take the next big steps in their development but also help our offense continue to excel against high-quality programs. She has a genuine love for the mid-major experience and the challenges that come with growing a program to new and unrealized heights. She is the perfect fit as we continue to stake our claim as a consistent championship program in the region."
Wright joins the Colonials after a distinguished five-year NCAA Division I playing career, including stints in both Conference USA and Big XII competition. She began her collegiate journey at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she pitched the 14th no-hitter in program history against UCONN.
During her time with the 49ers, she was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team and selected as Second-Team All-Conference USA in 2021, also earning Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors.
Wright contributed significantly to UNC Charlotte's historic first NCAA Regional appearance in 2023.
She then transferred to Texas Tech University, where she completed her playing career as a starting pitcher for the 2024 season. At Texas Tech, she led the team in innings pitched, ERA, strikeouts, and opponent batting average, earning the team's "Pitcher of the Year" award.
Beyond her playing accolades, Wright served as a Graduate Assistant at Texas Tech University from August 2024 to the present. In this role, she supported the day-to-day operations of the softball program under Head Coach Gerry Glasco, assisting with pitcher and hitter development. Her experience includes working closely with the program's nationally ranked pitchers and contributing to Texas Tech's Big XII Regular Season Title, Big XII Tournament Championship, Regional and Super-Regional Titles, and their impressive National Runner-Up finish this past season.
Wright's expertise extends to modern softball technology, as she is skilled in operating Synergy for video analysis and proficient in utilizing Rapsodo to assess pitching performance, including spin rate, velocity, and pitch movement. Her background as a two-way player also provides a well-rounded coaching perspective for all positions.
Academically, Wright is expected to earn her Master of Arts in Communications from Texas Tech University in August 2025, having previously earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a minor in American Studies from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in June of 2023.
