RMU Men’s Soccer Opens Campaign with Tie at Mercyhurst

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU men's soccer team battled to a scoreless draw at Mercyhurst on Thursday to open its 2025 campaign. The Colonials now hold a record of 0-0-1.
 
FIRST HALF
Senior Anass Hadran recorded the first shot on goal in the 13th minute, setting the tone for the Colonials' offensive efforts. After that chance, neither team managed a shot on goal until the 42nd minute when goalkeeper Josh Lane was forced to make his first save of the night.
 
The Colonials had a few near-misses that were called offside, but the Lakers controlled possession, holding 64% of the ball in the first 45 minutes.
 
SECOND HALF
Early in the second half, Hadran was in on a breakaway and was brought down in the box, but no call was made. For a 20-minute period, the Lakers posted four shots, but the game remained tied. Physical play picked up late in the match, with RMU receiving one yellow card and Mercyhurst receiving two.
 
The Colonials made a final push in the last 15 minutes, registering four shots and drawing three corner kicks, but neither side was able to find the back of the net.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Mercyhurst recorded nine shots to RMU's seven. Both sides posted three shots on target. The Colonials had five corner kicks compared to Mercyhurst's two. Anass Hadran, along with fellow starters Fabian Overkamp, Miguel Dominguez, and Kevin Gorbell, played the entire 90 minutes of the match.
 
COLONIAL FIRSTS
Several new faces made their debut for the Colonials. Transfers Miguel Dominguez, Kevin Gorbell, Jack Bejarano, Sullivan Twill, Jaxson Lee, Kyle Schueneman, and Emeric Nicol all played their first minutes in an RMU uniform. Freshmen Royie Rahamim and Matthew Eckersall also made their collegiate debuts.
 
CLEAN SHEET
Josh Lane was solid in net, making three saves to earn his first shutout of the season. The clean sheet marks the eighth of his career.
 
UP NEXT
RMU will play in Pittsburgh on Sunday, August 24, at Duquesne. The game is scheduled for 5:00 PM and will be streamed on ESPN+.
