MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – A second-half strike from junior forward
Ava Trethewey proved to be the difference as the RMU women's soccer team secured its first Horizon League victory of the 2025 season, defeating Detroit Mercy, 1-0, on Thursday afternoon at Montour Junction Sports Complex. With the win, the Colonials improve to 3-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening half was a defensive grind, with RMU controlling much of the possession – 59% of the ball – but unable to find a finishing touch in the final third.
Detroit Mercy nearly broke through late in the frame, generating six shots in the final six minutes, including a dangerous effort from midfielder Sam Sickinger that rattled off the crossbar.
After weathering that late push, the Colonials came out sharper in the second half and capitalized in the 57th minute.
A throw-in from the left side by freshman defender
Madison Hurst set up the chance, as she found sophomore
Ivy Chaskelson in space. Chaskelson lofted a precise cross to the back post, where Trethewey connected cleanly and buried her third goal of the year to give RMU the 1-0 advantage.
The Colonials nearly doubled their lead later in the match when freshman midfielder
Francesca Villa let fly from distance, only to see her strike clang off the woodwork.
Down the stretch, Detroit Mercy surged forward in search of an equalizer, forcing RMU goalkeeper
Emma Cameron to make four key saves in the final 10 minutes. She stood tall to secure her third career clean sheet.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Detroit Mercy held a 17-11 edge in total shots and a 6-5 advantage in shots on target, but RMU countered with superior set-piece opportunities, earning seven corner kicks to the Titans' two.
- Cameron finished the afternoon perfect, stopping all six shots on goal she faced to earn the shutout and her third career win.
- Chaskelson picked up her second assist of the season on the decisive goal, while Hurst was credited with her first of the campaign.
- Five Colonials – Jillian Marvin, Bailey Campbell, Julia Becerra, Shauna Gamble, and Chaskelson – played all 90 minutes of the game.
TRETHEWEY'S THIRD
Trethewey continued her recent scoring surge with the game's only goal, marking her third tally in the past four contests. The junior now leads RMU in points with seven (3g, 1a).
