RMU Women’s Hockey Competes in First-Ever Outdoor Game at Beaver Stadium

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The RMU women's hockey team battled Penn State in its first-ever outdoor game Friday evening at Beaver Stadium. In the historic matchup, the Colonials fell 3-0. RMU now stands at 10-17-2 overall with a 6-11-2 mark in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
 
FIRST PERIOD
Throughout the opening 20 minutes, neither side was able to find the back of the net.
 
RMU controlled the faceoff circle early, winning 11 of 15 draws. Alternate captain Catriona Crarer was a perfect 4-for-4 on faceoffs in the frame. Penn State held the edge in shots, 14-2. No penalties were assessed in the opening period.
 
SECOND PERIOD
The Colonials took two penalties during the second period and successfully killed off both, but Penn State built a 2-0 lead.
 
Just over 12 minutes into the frame, McKenna Walsh opened the scoring on a 3-on-1 rush. Fifty-one seconds later, Maddy Christian doubled the Nittany Lions' advantage.
 
THIRD PERIOD
RMU pushed offensively in the final period. At the midway point, Shayne Desjardins sprung Laura Eustace free on a breakaway, but her attempt was denied.
 
Penn State sealed the result with a goal from Grace Outwater with four minutes remaining, securing the 3-0 victory.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Penn State outshot RMU, 42-13, while the Colonials won 33 of 58 faceoffs (56.9%). Jessica MacKinnon led RMU with 14 faceoff wins.
  • RMU blocked 10 shots, led by Thalia D'Elia, Taylor Storey and Mya Kearns with two blocks apiece.
  • Penn State did not take a penalty in the game, while RMU successfully killed off both of the Nittany Lions' power play opportunities.
  • In net, Maggie Hatch played all 60 minutes, making 39 saves and posting a .929 save percentage.
 
HISTORY MADE
The RMU women's hockey program competed in its first-ever outdoor game at Beaver Stadium. The contest marked the third outdoor game in school history, joining the RMU men's hockey team's outdoor games against Bowling Green at Fifth Third Field in Toledo, Ohio (2015) and Niagara at Acrisure Stadium (2017).

RMU will look to split the series indoors Saturday at Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pa. Puck drop for the series finale is set for 6:00 PM and the game will stream live on the Big Ten Plus Network.
