MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Pat Gallagher Head Coach Andy Toole has announced the addition of Joel Brown to his coaching staff as an Assistant Coach.
"I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to join Coach Toole and the Robert Morris basketball program," said Brown. "Having experienced Division I basketball as a student-athlete and worked across different levels of the game, I'm excited to bring those experiences to RMU and contribute to the development of our players both on and off the court. I look forward to helping our student-athletes grow, compete at a high level, and build a foundation for success beyond basketball."
Brown joins the staff after most recently working as an assistant coach and trainer at Bella Vista College Preparatory, where he led individualized and small-group player development sessions, analyzed game film and assisted with opponent scouting, practice planning and game strategy. He also served as a scout-team player during practices, helping prepare players for opposing personnel and schemes.
Prior to his time at Bella Vista, Brown worked as a basketball strategy consultant associate with Standard Front Office, advising NCAA Division I programs on roster construction, transfer portal strategy and recruiting evaluations. His responsibilities included assessing potential recruits and transfer targets, analyzing name, image and likeness (NIL) opportunities, and helping coaching staffs evaluate roster needs and long-term program fit.
Brown also brings professional basketball experience to Moon Township, having served as a basketball operations assistant with the NBA's Denver Nuggets from August 2024 through May 2025. In that role, he evaluated high school prospects, developed player profiles and scouting resources, coordinated scouting schedules and meetings, and contributed to team operations and player development activities.
A former Division I student-athlete, Brown competed at both the University of California, Berkeley, and Iona University from 2019 through 2024. During his collegiate career, he gained experience preparing for opponents through statistical analysis and film breakdown while balancing the demands of Division I basketball and academics.
Brown earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of California, Berkeley, in May 2023 before completing his Master of Business Administration with honors at Iona University in May 2024.
Beyond his coaching and basketball operations experience, Brown is the co-founder and trainer of Basketball Politics, a social enterprise focused on helping athletes navigate the business of sports and prepare for life beyond competition. Through the organization, he has helped lead basketball camps and mentorship opportunities for young athletes.
Brown also represented Canada in international basketball competition, earning selection to the Canadian National Team in 2018, 2019 and 2023. During his time at California, he was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 Team in 2020 and 2021.
