Trethewey’s Late Free Kick Earns RMU a Draw Against NIU

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Ava Trethewey scored on a free kick in the 81st minute to help the RMU women's soccer team earn a 2-2 draw against Northern Illinois. All four goals came in the second half, as the Colonials rallied to secure a point. With the draw, RMU moves to 5-8-4 overall and 2-5-3 in Horizon League play.

FIRST HALF
Northern Illinois came out attacking, hitting the woodwork early and forcing Emma Cameron to make two saves to keep the match scoreless.

After the opening 15 minutes, the Colonials settled into the contest and began creating opportunities of their own. Allysa Mella, Ava Trethewey and Madison Sievering each put a shot on target, but the Huskies kept RMU off the scoreboard heading into halftime.

SECOND HALF
Seven minutes into the second half, Northern Illinois took a 1-0 lead when a corner kick deflected off an RMU player and into the back of the net.

The Colonials responded in the 69th minute with a set-piece goal of their own. Madison Sievering delivered a cross into the box, where Alyssa Mella headed it home for her second goal of the season to even the score at 1-1.

NIU regained the lead just a minute later when Monica Correa scored from distance off an assist from Abby Foulk.

RMU continued to push for an equalizer and earned a free kick in a dangerous position in the 80th minute. Trethewey's initial attempt was blocked, but the Colonials earned another opportunity just outside the 18-yard box moments later. This time, Trethewey found the back of the net in the 81st minute to pull RMU even at 2-2.

Neither side found a winner in the closing minutes, as the Colonials secured the draw.
