RMU Announces Addition of NCAA Division I Women's Flag Football

10/6/2026 10:00:00 AM

MOON TOWNSHIP, PA. – Robert Morris University has announced the addition of NCAA Division I women's flag football, expanding the University's varsity athletics offerings and creating new opportunities for female student-athletes to compete at the Division I level.

The new program will begin competition in 2027-28, with RMU preparing to build its inaugural roster and establish a foundation for long-term success. Women's flag football was added to the NCAA Emerging Sports for Women program in January 2026, allowing institutions across all three NCAA divisions to sponsor the sport at the varsity level. The sport is also set to make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

"Adding women's flag football is a tremendous opportunity for female student-athletes and for Robert Morris University," said Dr. Ron Moses, Vice President and Director of Athletics at RMU. "As this sport continues its remarkable growth, we have an opportunity to provide talented student-athletes with a Division I competitive experience and an outstanding RMU education. We're excited to build a program that reflects the momentum of the sport and the standards we have for Robert Morris Athletics."

Robert Morris will begin a national search for the program's inaugural head coach next week. The new head coach will lead the development of the program, recruitment of the inaugural roster, and establish the culture and identity of RMU women's flag football.

The addition of women's flag football reflects RMU's continued investment in its Division I athletics and its commitment to creating new opportunities for student-athletes as the landscape of college athletics continues to evolve.

RMU will announce additional details regarding the program, including its inaugural head coach and competition schedule, as they become available.
