MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's hockey team battled back to force overtime but ultimately fell, 3-2, to Lindenwood Friday night at Clearview Arena. With the loss, the Colonials move to 12-19-2 overall and 10-12-1 in conference play.
FIRST PERIOD
The opening 20 minutes featured strong pace and physical play, but neither side was able to solve the opposing netminder.
RMU carried the territorial edge early, outshooting Lindenwood 13-10 in the frame. Captain
Alaina Giampietro was especially active, registering four shots in the first period alone.
Both teams earned one power-play opportunity, though each penalty kill stood tall. The Colonials generated four shots on goal during their advantage but were unable to break through before the intermission.
SECOND PERIOD
Five minutes into the middle stanza, RMU found the spark it was looking for.
Morgan Giannone delivered the teddy bear toss goal, finishing a play set up by
Mya Kearns and Giampietro to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead.
The momentum was short-lived, however, as Tatiana Blichova answered less than a minute later to even the score at 1-1. Just two minutes after the equalizer, Silje Gundersen gave the Lions their first lead of the night, flipping the score to 2-1.
Despite surrendering back-to-back goals, RMU continued to press and held a narrow 10-9 advantage in shots during the period.
THIRD PERIOD
Midway through the third, the Colonials nearly pulled even on a 2-on-1 rush when Giannone set up
Ashlyn Ham, but a perfectly timed save preserved Lindenwood's one-goal edge.
RMU's persistence paid off in the 15th minute of regulation.
Emma Goding buried the game-tying goal off assists from
Hannah Thornton and
Mary Snyder, knotting the contest at 2-2.
The Colonials surged late, generating 10 shot attempts in the final five minutes of regulation. Defensively,
Shayne Desjardins delivered a key sequence, blocking three consecutive shots to help push the game to overtime.
OVERTIME
The extra session was brief. Paige Cline scored just 24 seconds into overtime to secure the 3-2 victory and the extra conference point for Lindenwood.
