Mia Berthoff gave the Colonials a thrilling 13-12 win over crosstown rival Duquesne on Wednesday night at Joe Walton Stadium
FIRST HALF
The Dukes got on the board first before the Colonials answered back at 11:55 on a goal by
Jade Doldo to make it 1-1 early in the contest. Duquesne extended its lead in the first period with back-to-back goals before RMU scored a flurry of goals, scoring four unanswered goals featuring goals from Doldo,
Madison Prietz,
Taylor Burkett, and
Gabi Puzevich to put the Colonials up 5-3 with 5:29 on the clock. The Dukes got one back to cut RMU's lead to one before the Colonials closed out the first quarter with goals from Burkett and
Lea Otts, leading 7-4 at the end of the first quarter.
RMU came out hot to start the second quarter, scoring three goals to extend their lead to six. Otts scored the first goal of the quarter and her second of the game before Berthoff got in on the action with back-to-back goals. Duquesne went on a run of its own, scoring four unanswered goals to close out the second quarter with the Colonials up by just two, leading Duquesne 10-8 going into the half.
SECOND HALF
The third quarter was all Duquesne as the Dukes put up three goals to take an 11-10 lead going into the final quarter.
Duquesne started the fourth quarter with a free position goal from Emma Raines to go up by two before the Colonials got back-to-back goals, one from Prietz and one from Berthoff, to tie the contest up at 12-12. With two seconds on the clock, Berthoff was awarded a free position attempt, finding the back of the net for the game winner, giving the Colonials a 13-12 win over Duquesne.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Mia Berthoff led the Colonials with four goals and an assist for five points. Berthoff also recorded four draw controls, three groundballs, and two caused turnovers.
Lea Otts,
Madison Prietz,
Taylor Burkett, and
Jade Doldo all recorded two goals apiece, while
Gabi Puzevic recorded one to round out the goal scorers. Prietz also recorded a team-high two assists and six draw controls on the night.
In goal,
Katrina Bottomley and
Lucy Carney split time, with Carney being credited with the win after coming in the second quarter and recording four saves and five ground balls.
Megan Marco led the Dukes with four goals and an assist for five points on the night. In goal, Ella Roach was tagged with the loss, giving up 13 goals while recording seven saves.
