MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Behind a flawless performance from freshman goaltender
Charlie Schenkel and a second-period game-winner from
Dominic Elliott, the RMU men's hockey team edged Canisius, 1-0, on Friday night at Clearview Arena. With the win, the Colonials improved to 8-16-3 overall and 8-9-2 in Atlantic Hockey America (AHA) play.
FIRST PERIOD
Canisius controlled much of the opening frame, outshooting RMU 15-4 over the first 20 minutes. Despite the early pressure, Schenkel stood tall in net and neither team was able to find the scoreboard as the period ended scoreless. No penalties were called in the opening stanza.
SECOND PERIOD
RMU broke through midway through the second period to open the scoring. As the puck wrapped around the boards, Elliott collected it and fired a shot that deflected off a Canisius defenseman and into the net, giving the Colonials a 1-0 lead.
Patrick Johnson and
Gabriel Lunn earned assists on the play.
The Colonials were forced to kill off one penalty in the period, while the Golden Griffins held an 11-8 edge in shots.
THIRD PERIOD
RMU shut down Canisius's push in the final 20 minutes, outshooting the Golden Griffins 13-10. Canisius earned two power-play opportunities in the period, but Schenkel continued to make timely saves as RMU held on to secure the 1-0 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Canisius outshot RMU 36-25. Jackson Reineke paced the Colonials with four shots on goal.
- Elliott, Lunn, Johnson, Connor Gourley and Lee Chiang all finished the night at +1.
- RMU won 27 of 55 faceoffs, led by Trent Wilson's team-high 11 wins at the dot.
- Defensively, the Colonials blocked 29 shots. AHA blocks leader John Babcock led all skaters with seven.
- RMU went 0-for-1 on the power play but successfully killed off all three Canisius man-advantage chances.
FIRST CAREER SHUTOUT
Schenkel earned his first career shutout, stopping all 36 shots he faced. The Toronto native has now collected five wins this season and carries a .903 save percentage. RMU has recorded shutouts in three of its last six games.
GAME-WINNER
Elliott's goal marked his first game-winning tally of the season and the second of his career. The sophomore defenseman now has four goals, nine assists and 13 points this year, along with 10 goals, 22 assists and 32 points in his collegiate career.

RMU will look to complete the series sweep against Canisius on Saturday night at Clearview Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:00 PM, with the game airing on SportsNet Pittsburgh and FloHockey.
