Colonials Open Up Weekend with Sweep of Mercyhurst

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU women's softball team (10-6) opened up its weekend series in dominant fashion Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader against Mercyhurst in non-conference action.

GAME 1: RMU 11, Mercyhurst 2 (5 INNINGS)
The Colonials struck first in game one as Courtney Poulich sent a two-out solo shot over the right-center fence for her conference-leading ninth homerun of the season to give the Colonials an early 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

In the top of the second, Mercyhurst got two on the scoreboard after the Lakers' leadoff hitter reached base via a walk, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before being brought in to score on a double by Natalie Cully to make it 1-1. Another double by the Lakers put runners on second and third with one out before a Karlie Kasten single drove in Cully, giving the Lakers a 2-1 lead. RMU's Madelyn Coleman got out of the jam, recording back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

After a three-strikeout inning for Coleman in the top of the third, the Colonials' offense exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the third.

Despite starting the inning with a groundout, RMU's Kaylyn Hopf reached base via a walk before advancing to second on an Eloise Fatcher in-field single, putting two runners on for Poulich with just one out. Poulich delivered with an RBI single through the left side to score Hopf, marking her 100th career RBI, while advancing Facher to third.

Mary Brant kept the scoring frenzy going in the bottom of the third following Poulich's RBI single with a three-run home run to left center to give the Colonials a 5-2 lead. A Katyln Jardine single and back-to-back-to-back doubles by Erynn Thompson, Mackenzie Hoover, and Camryn Harbold made it 8-2 as Jardin scored on Thompson's double, Thompson on Hover's double, and Hoover on Harbold's double.

The Colonials returned to top of their lineup with Hopf reaching base again, this time with an RBI single that drove in Harbold to make it 9-2 before Poulich delivered for her third hit of the game, another RBI single to left field to score Hopf, making it 10-2 before the Lakers finally got out of the inning with a fly out to center field.

RMU held Mercyhurst scoreless in the top of the fourth before getting one more run in the bottom of the inning to enact the 10-run rule. Aglaia Rudd started the inning off with a solo home run to center field, her sixth of the season, to make it 11-2.

Coleman was able to pitch a clean fifth inning frame, closing out the contest with a swinging strikeout, securing an 11-2 first game victory for RMU

QUOTABLE- HEAD COACH JEXX VARNER
"Game one was a good and dominant way to start the weekend. The offense, top to bottom, did a really good job of driving our pitches the second time around. It was a very good start for MC and a great way to get her back on track and throwing confidently."

"We will take the win in game two, but know we have to be better at the plate. It was the first time this year we just didn't adjust and were not disciplined enough around the edges of the plate."

"Tomorrow is another day, and we will get ourselves back on track. Maddie Brown did a really good job in the circle and continues to show how great of a competitor she is, staying ahead and challenging hitters. Kaylyn's robbery in centerfield was huge, and Erynn did a good job at third base. When our defense plays like that, it allows our pitchers to throw confidently."

"We've got two more tomorrow, and I'm happy to have two fresh arms to wrap up the series and ready to adjust better at the plate."

UP NEXT
The Colonials (10-6) will now gear up to face Mercyhurst (1-10) in Erie tomorrow afternoon, with the doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. The games will be streamed live on NEC Front Row.
