RMU Men’s Hockey’s Season Ends in Semifinal Round at Sacred Heart

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The RMU men's hockey team's season came to an end Sunday night in game three of the Atlantic Hockey America Semifinals, falling to Sacred Heart, 5-0. The Colonials conclude the 2025-26 campaign with a 16-21-3 overall record.

FIRST PERIOD
Sacred Heart took control of the game early. After the Colonials were called for a penalty, the Pioneers capitalized on the power play as Marcus Joughin found the back of the net.

In the final five minutes of the period, SHU added two more goals to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the first intermission. The Pioneers outshot RMU 9-4 in the opening frame.

SECOND PERIOD
The momentum shifted in the middle frame as RMU outshot Sacred Heart 17-6, but the Colonials were unable to solve the Pioneer goaltender.

RMU earned two power-play opportunities, and defenseman Dominic Elliott rang a shot off the pipe, but the Colonials could not find the back of the net.

THIRD PERIOD
Sacred Heart extended its lead early in the final period. Four minutes in, Reed Pabich scored on the power play for the Pioneers' second man-advantage goal of the night.

With eight minutes remaining, RMU pulled netminder Charlie Schenkel to add an extra attacker. The Colonials recorded 11 shot attempts with the extra skater but were unable to convert, and Sacred Heart sealed the win with an empty-net goal with five minutes left to secure the 5-0 victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
QUOTABLE – HEAD COACH DEREK SCHOOLEY
"I thought in the second and third periods we played much better. We threw everything at them that we could, so hats off to them. We congratulate Sacred Heart — that was a hard series. I'm really proud of the effort our guys gave in the second and third. We could've easily packed it in, but we didn't. That just shows you what kind of team we were all year."

"I asked them to buy in a lot this year and I got it all. This team was on par with our 2014 championship team that had a tough start but then went on a run. Right now, it's time to honor this team because they were outstanding. They did everything we asked."

"We all punch above our weight class in everything we do — whether it's our administration or our programs. We have a great athletic department that always does everything we need to be successful. RMU is a special place."
