MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Five different players drove in two runs apiece as RMU powered past Green Bay, 10-6, in the Horizon League opener Friday afternoon at the North Athletic Complex. With the win, the Colonials improve to 13-6 overall and 1-0 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
RMU set the tone early behind junior pitcher
Kaitlyn Molitoris, who struck out two of the first three batters she faced.
The Colonials wasted no time offensively in the bottom of the first.
Kaylyn Hopf and
Eloise Facher each singled up the middle before
Aglaia Rudd delivered a two-run double to right center, giving RMU a 2-0 advantage.
Green Bay answered with a solo home run in the second, but RMU responded immediately in the bottom half.
Alivia Hare reached on a bunt single and
Erynn Thompson was hit by a pitch before
Katlyn Jardine advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Hopf then doubled over the left fielder's head to plate two, and
Courtney Poulich followed with a two-run home run to extend the lead to 6-1.
The Phoenix chipped away in the third with another solo homer and capitalized on a throwing error to make it 6-3.
RMU answered again in the bottom of the inning. After Rudd drew a walk and Hare doubled, Jardine came through with a two-out, two-run double to right center, pushing the lead to 8-3.
Green Bay continued to battle, scoring twice in the fourth and adding another run in the sixth.
Madison Brown entered in the fifth and worked in a save situation, limiting the damage down the stretch.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Sequoia Dunlap provided the final blow, launching a two-run home run over the center field wall. Brown then shut the door in the seventh to secure the 10-6 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- RMU held a narrow 12-11 edge in hits, led by Hare's three-hit performance. All nine starters reached base in the win.
- Dunlap, Hopf, Jardine, Poulich, and Rudd each recorded two RBI, while the Colonials also drew four walks compared to two for Green Bay.
- In the circle, Molitoris earned her fifth win of the season, striking out five across four innings of work. Brown picked up her second save, tossing the final three innings.
MILESTONE REACHED
Poulich's milestone moment came in fitting fashion, as her 100th career hit left the yard. The senior now owns 11 home runs and 33 RBI this season, bringing her career total to 33 home runs—just three shy of the program record.
"It's a perfect fit for her to get her 100th career hit as a home run that got our offense going," said head coach
Jexx Varner. "She's elite and has been awesome for us. It's a great accomplishment, and there's many more to come."
DOUBLE DIGITS
Friday marked RMU's 11th game this season scoring 10 or more runs and its third straight reaching double figures. During their current six-game winning streak, the Colonials have outscored opponents 62-17.
QUOTABLE – HEAD COACH JEXX VARNER
On the entire lineup reaching base: "Last week the depth showed as we had a 5-0 week. We were down Sequoia and Alivia, but to have them back just continues to add depth and leaves some great bats on the bench to come in now. One through nine in our lineup plus our pinch hitters gives us a very deep offense, and there's no way around it."
On the return of Dunlap and Hare: "It was great to put Sequoia back in the lineup in the sixth spot and Alivia in the seventh spot. They had a home run and four hits today—so with them back, it's going to be very hard to handle us, and that's the objective."
