Colonials Drop Final Game at Catamount Classic to Ohio

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The RMU softball team wrapped up play at the Catamount Classic Sunday afternoon, falling 9-1 to Ohio. With the result, the Colonials move to 7-6 overall on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
RMU threatened early in the bottom of the first inning, putting two runners on base, but were unable to bring either across.

After a scoreless opening frame, Ohio seized control of the game in the second inning, plating six runs to take an early advantage.

The Bobcats added to their lead in the top of the third with a solo home run, pushing the score to 7-0.

The Colonials broke through in the bottom of the fourth when Alivia Hare launched her second home run of the tournament, trimming the deficit.

Ohio answered with two more runs in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 9-1. RMU was unable to mount a comeback, as the game concluded via run rule.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
QUOTABLE – HEAD COACH JEXX VARNER
"This was a long weekend and a tough turnaround today after the delays and rainout last night. But we know we need to play better, and we also know that we are less than a half step away from being 3-1 on a very tough weekend."

"We are in a decent place and that's a perspective we need to remember. At this point last year, we were 4-8 and being outhit and outpitched. This year, we have a winning record and have flipped the offensive and pitching stats from last year. We have an elite offense, and we know what we need to do on the defensive/pitching side."

"We've got seven more games before Horizon League play, so we've got a chance to work through things and get healthy. It's time for us to own it, believe in ourselves, trust the process and get to work!"

UP NEXT
RMU will continue non-conference play with a single game at Pitt. First pitch is scheduled for Wednesday, March 11 at 6:00 PM, with the game set to stream on ACC Network.
