MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – In a Saturday afternoon matchup against the Akron Zips, RMU fell 16-6 at Joe Walton Stadium to fall to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in MAC play.
FIRST HALF
The Zips came out hot to begin the contest, with the Zips scoring four unanswered goals, three from Sienna Hinchcliffe and one from Heather Carey, in the first quarter, to lead 4-0 after the first 15 minutes of play.
Akron tacked on three more unanswered goals to begin the second half before RMU struck with 7:28 on the clock as
Lea Otts found the back of the net for an unassisted goal, her ninth of the season, to make it 7-1. The Zips went on another three-goal run to extend their lead to nine, before
Amanda Dolis struck unassisted with just over two minutes in the half, making it 10-2 going into halftime.
SECOND HALF
The Colonials put up back-to-back goals to kick off the second half, with
Samantha Brothers striking first at 11:28 off a pass from
Taylor Burkett, before
Mia Berthoff scored a woman-up goal with the assist going to Otts at 10:18 to make it 10-4. The Zips closed out the quarter on another three-goal run to make it 13-4 going into the final frame.
Three more goals by the Zips extended Akron's lead to 16 before the Colonials closed out the contest with two goals in the final minute.
Julia Foley got in on the scoring action with 56 seconds on the clock, an unassisted goal, to record her fourth of the season. Brothers finished off the contest with a goal at the buzzer, her second of the game, to make the final score 16-6.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Samantha Brothers led the Colonials on the day with two goals, her second multi-goal game of the season. The other goal scorers for the Colonials included
Lea Otts,
Amanda Dolis,
Mia Berthoff, and
Julia Foley. Otts led the Colonials with two assists on the day, leading the team with 13 on the season.
Madison Prietz took control of the draw control for the Colonials, recording a season-high of seven on the afternoon.
In goal,
Lucy Carney went the distance, allowing 16 goals while recording 14 saves in the loss. Carney is now 3-4 on the season in the net for RMU.
Looking at team statistics, the Zips controlled the shot margin 34-12, while also forcing 21 RMU turnovers on the afternoon. Akron also held an 18-12 groundball advantage, while RMU controlled the draw control, beating Akron 13-11.
For Akron, Sienna Hinchcliffe had a 10-point day, featuring a team-leading six goals and four assists. In goal, Adrianna Califano got the win, allowing six goals while recording three saves.
