MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU softball team mounted a late push but couldn't overcome a five-run deficit, falling 5-2 to Pitt Tuesday afternoon at the NAC Softball Field. With the setback, the Colonials move to 21-15 overall on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were kept off the scoreboard through the first four innings, as pitching and defense controlled the early tempo. RMU threatened multiple times but left runners stranded in scoring position.
Pitt broke the deadlock in the top of the fifth with a solo home run to take a 1-0 lead.
The Colonials looked poised to respond in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases, but were unable to capitalize.
In the sixth, the Panthers added to their lead. With two runners in scoring position, a wild pitch brought home a run to make it 2-0.
Pitt created separation in the seventh, capitalizing on miscues. Two RMU errors, along with a walk and a hit-by-pitch, led to three unearned runs as the Colonials faced a 5-0 deficit heading into their final at-bat.
RMU showed resilience in the bottom of the seventh.
Katlyn Jardine,
Erynn Thompson, and
Kaylyn Hopf opened the inning with three consecutive singles to load the bases.
Eloise Facher drove in the first run with a groundout, and
Courtney Poulich followed with an RBI single up the middle to cut the deficit to 5-2. However, Pitt recorded the final two outs to seal the victory.
