MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – RMU tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning but surrendered three runs in the 10th, falling 7-4 to Youngstown State in the series opener. The Colonials move to 16-9 overall with a 4-3 mark in conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior pitcher
Kaitlyn Molitoris set the tone early, striking out three batters through the first two innings, but Youngstown State struck first in the third with an RBI double.
RMU answered in the bottom of the fourth as
Aglaia Rudd evened the score with a solo home run to center field.
The Penguins responded immediately in the fifth, plating two runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. They extended their lead in the seventh with another sac fly, taking a 4-1 advantage with three outs remaining.
With the game on the line, the Colonials mounted a late rally. Pinch hitter
Marta Gualazzi sparked the comeback with a leadoff double to right-center, followed by a walk from
Kaylyn Hopf. With two outs and the tying run at the plate,
Courtney Poulich delivered, launching a three-run homer on the first pitch she saw to tie the game and force extra innings.
Both teams were held scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings as the starting pitchers continued to battle in the circle.
In the 10th, Youngstown State capitalized on two hits and a defensive miscue to regain the lead, eventually adding an RBI single to bring across three unearned runs.
RMU was unable to answer in the bottom half, falling 7-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Youngstown State outhit RMU, 8-6, while the Colonials committed four errors compared to one by the Penguins.
- RMU drew four walks, while YSU earned two.
- Rudd and Eloise Facher each tallied a team-high two hits, while Poulich led with three RBIs.
- Sequoia Dunlap recorded six assists at shortstop, and Alivia Hare added a stolen base.
- In the circle, Molitoris tossed a career-long 9.2 innings, striking out eight and allowing just three earned runs. Sammie Borrayo recorded the final out of the 10th with a strikeout.
RECORD WATCH
As a team, the Colonials have now hit 49 home runs, just one shy of tying last season's program record of 50.
Poulich continues to close in on her own single-season records set in 2025. With her home run today, she now has 46 RBIs, 44 runs scored and 15 home runs, approaching her marks of 53 RBIs, 45 runs and 16 homers.
