RMU Battles to a 1-1 Tie Against Oakland

Azard scores his fifth goal of the season

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – The RMU men's soccer team battled Oakland to a 1-1 draw at the North Athletic Complex Saturday evening. With the result, the Colonials move to 4-2-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Horizon League play.

FIRST HALF
Oakland came out aggressively, recording three shots and earning three corner kicks within a two-minute span, but RMU's defense handled the early pressure to keep the game scoreless.

Later in the half, Anelson Azard created a goal through a strong individual effort. In the corner, Azard stole the ball from an Oakland defender before making a touch toward goal and firing a shot perfectly into the corner of the net to give the Colonials a 1-0 lead.

The Golden Grizzlies responded less than five minutes later, however. On the counterattack, Christopher Jean Leger put away a shot to level the score before halftime.

SECOND HALF
In the second half, RMU created opportunities from Giovanni Dennis and Azard but could not find the go-ahead goal.

The Colonials came inches away from finding the winner in the final 30 seconds. From distance, Matthew Eckersall played a long cross perfectly to the back post, finding the feet of Riley Cotton. Cotton one-timed the ball toward goal, but his attempt hit the post and narrowly missed giving RMU the victory.

In the end, the teams settled for a 1-1 draw.
