Summary

Biography

One of the most versatile student-athletes to occupy a roster spot at Robert Morris was senior Lucky Jones. From his wing position, Jones provided the Colonials with the ability to score from any spot on the floor, showed an uncanny ability to get to the free-throw line and was a tenacious defender. The area he excelled most, however, was his ability to rebound. In his collegiate debut, Jones grabbed 13 rebounds in an 83-57 victory over Rider (11/11/11) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. From that point forward, Jones cleaned the glass at a furious pace, culminating in him becoming the program’s all-time leading rebounder as a senior. A look at some of his accomplishments in both 2014-15 and over his four-year career at RMU ...

Top Of The List - Senior forward Lucky Jones was a key contributor in helping Robert Morris earn its first victory in the NCAA Tournament since 1983 and just the program’s second win overall in an 81-77 victory over North Florida (3/18/15) in Dayton, Ohio, at UD Arena. Jones paced the Colonials with 21 points and also added seven rebounds and five steals. The win over the Ospreys marked the 92nd victory Jones was a part of during his four seasons in an RMU uniform, the most wins accumulated by any student-athlete in school history and breaking the old record of 91 that was held by a trio of Colonials (Gary Wallace, Velton Jones and Russell Johnson).

The Round Mound of Rebound - Senior Lucky Jones etched his name in the RMU record book against St. Francis Brooklyn (1/16/15) at the Charles L. Sewall Center, as his defensive rebound at the 19:05 mark of the second half helped him become the program’s all-time leading rebounder. Jones finished with nine caroms against the Terriers and concluded his career with 846 career rebounds. He broke the old record of 751 that was held by former Colonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) and Tony Lee (2004-08). A look at the top five rebounders in program history ...

2. Anthony Dickens 1985-90 108 751 7.0
    Tony Lee 2004-08 119 751 6.3
4. Russell Johnson 2009-13 129 746 5.8
5. A.J. Jackson 2003-08 97 685 7.1

Mr. Jones - Lucky Jones saved some of the best basketball of his career for the stretch run, as the senior forward led the Colonials in scoring in the 2015 Northeast Conference Tournament at 16.7 points per game. For his efforts, Jones earned a spot on the 2015 All-NEC Tournament Team. Despite scoring just seven points in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against Duke (3/20/15), Jones entered the game against the Blue Devils having reached double figures in scoring in 12 consecutive games, the longest streak of his career. During that span, Jones averaged 16.9 points and 5.7 rebounds over that span while shooting 45 percent (63-for-140) from the field.

A Special Trio - Senior forward Lucky Jones became just the third player in Northeast Conference history to eclipse career totals of 1,300 points, 700 rebounds, 150 assists and 150 steals. Jones concluded his career with totals of 1,642 points, 846 rebounds, 186 assists and 171 steals. He joined former RMU guard Tony Lee (2004-08) and former LIU Brooklyn forward Jamal Olasewere (2009-13) to turn the trick.

Freebies - A big reason forward Lucky Jones finished as one of the top five scorers in program history was due to his ability to get to the charity stripe. In 31 games in 2014-15, Jones converted 112 of his 142 attempts at the free-throw line, a success rate of 78.9 percent that ranked sixth in the Northeast Conference. Jones finished his career by converting 79.7 percent (448-for-562) of his attempts at the chalk, which ranks just outside the top 10 all-time at Robert Morris. Jones became just the second player in school history to convert at least 400 career free throws, joining former teammate Velton Jones (2008-13), when he finished 1-for-2 at the stripe in a 63-59 overtime victory @ Mount St. Mary’s (1/22/15).

Sewall Record - Senior forward Lucky Jones owns the RMU single-game record for most free throws made without a miss at the Charles L. Sewall Center. In a 60-48 victory over in-state rival Saint Francis U. (2/6/13) during his sophomore campaign, Jones finished a perfect 13-for-13 at the charity stripe en route to a game-high 20 points.

Climbing The Charts - Senior forward Lucky Jones helped lead Robert Morris to its first victory in the NCAA Tournament since 1983 in an 81-77 win over North Florida (3/18/15) as part of the NCAA First Four by pacing the Colonials with 21 points. The performance against the Ospreys helped Jones push his career total for double-figure scoring games to 88, which ranks fourth all-time in program history.

Triple Threat - A key part of the repetoire that senior forward Lucky Jones brought to his game during his Robert Morris career was his ability to knock down the three-point shot. Over his final two seasons, Jones connected for 130 three-pointers and during his four-year career knocked down 196 triples, which ranks ninth in program history.

The Clibanoff Special - What did forward Lucky Jones have in common in 2012-13 with Otto Porter of Georgetown, Doug McDermott of Creighton and Christian Watford of Indiana? The quartet were the only four players in NCAA Division I on the year to connect for at least 40 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc (minimum 40 attempts), grab a rebound every five minutes and get to the free-throw line an average of once every seven minutes. In 2012-13, Jones converted 42.7 percent (44-for-103) of his attempts from deep and grabbed 203 rebounds in 955 minutes, an average of one every 4.7 minutes. Jones was also RMU’s top free-throw shooter, converting 82.2 percent (125-for-152) of his attempts at the chalk while averaging a free-throw attempt every 6.3 minutes.
