The home of the Robert Morris men’s and women’s hockey programs, Colonials Arena is part of the RMU Island Sports Center, located just nine miles from downtown Pittsburgh on the western tip of Neville Island.
Colonials Arena is one of the RMU ISC’s two indoor arenas. The men’s program began Division I play with the 2004-05 campaign and is part of Atlantic Hockey, while the women’s program started Division I competition in 2005-06 and is a member of College Hockey America (CHA).
In March of 2012, the RMU women’s program hosted its first CHA Tournament and snapped a streak of nine consecutive CHA titles by Mercyhurst with a 3-2 victory over the Lakers in the championship game.
Since moving to a best-of-three format in the first round as well as the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament, the Robert Morris men’s program owns a record of 12-3 (.800) in tournament home games. The Colonials swept a first round series from Sacred Heart in 2013 as well as earned sweeps in the quarterfinals over Niagara (2015) and Holy Cross (2017).
In 2014, RMU posted a 2-1 series victory over Army in the first round of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament on home ice en route to its first tournament title and subsequent bid to the NCAA Tournament.
During the 2016-17 campaign, the Robert Morris women’s program posted a record of 11-2-3 (.781) at its home rink to help propel the Colonials to the 2017 CHA regular-season championship. RMU went on to win the CHA Tournament for the second time and earn its first bid to the NCAA Tournament.
