Delbert Tyler is in his second stint with the Colonials as well as his sixth year overall with the program in 2023. He currently serves as assistant tight ends coach as well as the program's recruiting coordinator. Tyler returned to RMU in March of 2022 after serving the 2021 campaign as the defensive recruiting coordinator at Army West Point.

Tyler has filled a variety of roles during his time at RMU. While serving as recruiting coordinator since beginning his tenure with the Colonials, Tyler has also coached the defensive line and outside linebackers.

In his second season with the program in 2019, Tyler helped the Colonials post an overall record of 7-5 (.583), including a mark of 6-1 (.857) in the Northeast Conference (NEC). It marked the program’s first winning season in almost 10 years. During the 2019 campaign, Tyler assisted in coaching the linebackers, helping Aniello Buzzacco establish a new RMU single-season record for tackles with 131, an average of 10.9 per game that led the NEC and ranked fifth in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

“Delbert loves this area,” head coach Bernard Clark, Jr., said. “I coached Delbert at Hampton and so I saw the coach in him on the field. He was the guy on the field who lined everybody up and made sure they were where they were supposed to be.”

Prior to joining the staff at RMU, Tyler spent the 2017 season as a graduate assistant defensive line coach at Eastern Michigan University while also assisting in recruiting and film breakdown. While with the Eagles, Tyler molded defensive lineman Maxx Crosby and Jeremiah Harris into All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) honorees. Crosby concluded the 2017 season with 16.5 tackles for loss, including 11 sacks, while Harris finished with 12.5 tackles for loss, including six sacks.

Before joining the staff at EMU, Tyler spent the 2016 campaign coaching the defensive line at the University of Findlay. In addition to his coaching duties, Tyler broke down film and rank the scout team while also recruiting portions of Ohio. He also served as assistant linebacker coach at ASA College of Miami in 2016.

Tyler, a native of Monroeville, Pa., was a four-year starter and defensive captain at Hampton from 2010-13. Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management in 2014, Tyler was invited to the rookie mini-camp for the Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League (NFL) in 2014. Tyler amassed 386 career tackles at Hampton, which established a program record and now ranks second all-time in school history. He was a three-time All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) honoree as well as a four-year letterwinner at linebacker.
