The 2024 season is the second for Jerome Smith as an assistant coach with the Colonials. He oversees the RMU running backs.
Smith, a native of Bear, Del., spent the 2022 season as special teams and running backs coach with ASA Brooklyn College. While with the Avengers, Smith oversaw all aspects of the special teams and offensive game plans. He charted play calls and tendencies for both the offense and defense while being responsible for scouting opponents.
Prior to his position at ASA Brooklyn College, Smith spent two months with the Pittsburgh Steelers as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Internship program. During his time with the Steelers, Smith was responsible for drawing scout cards, charting defensive tendencies and video analysis.
Smith is a 2014 graduate of Syracuse University, where he earned a degree in hospitality management. He was a four-year letterwinner for the Orange at running back, serving as team captain as a senior in 2013. Named to the both the Doak Walker and Maxwell Trophy watch lists in his final season at Syracuse, Smith appeared in 40 career games, rushing for 2,219 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Atlanta Falcons in 2014, Smith spent two years in the National Football League (NFL). He began his coaching career in 2019 at Morgan State, spending three seasons with the Bears as both running backs coach and assistant special teams coordinator. In addition to game plans and coaching, Smith oversaw Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Virginia for recruiting.
