Troy Rothenbuhler joined the RMU Football staff in March 2025 as offensive coordinator.
Rothenbuhler comes to RMU after spending the last five years as Youngstown State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, leading the Penguins to a second-round berth in the FCS Championship.
 
During the 2023 season, YSU averaged a school-record 243.1 passing yards per game, surpassing the previous record of 235.8 yards set in 1972. The team also set school records for completions (270), attempts (388), and completion percentage (69.6%).
 
Rothenbuhler has coached over 15 MVFC All-Conference players, including the 2022 Offensive Player of the Year and the 2021 Freshman of the Year.
 
He has also served as the offensive coordinator at Bowling Green, Findlay, Heidelberg, and Ohio Northern.
 
Rothenbuhler spent the 2019 season at Eastern Kentucky as the tight ends coach, helping the Colonels to a 7-5 record. His tight end group contributed to EKU leading the conference and ranking 20th nationally in rushing offense.
 
In 2018, he worked with the Arizona Cardinals in the NFL as a quality control coach, assisting with the quarterbacks.
 
From 2011 to 2017, Rothenbuhler served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Findlay. In 2017, he helped lead UF to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in program history. That season, Findlay was the only NCAA team to average over 250 yards in both rushing and passing per game. The Oilers ranked sixth nationally in scoring (44.5 PPG), third in total offense (515.5 YPG), third in third-down conversion percentage (52.4%), and fifth in time of possession (34:26). They finished with 41 rushing touchdowns and 31 passing touchdowns, posting a 10-3 record.
 
As the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Ohio Northern University (2009-10), Rothenbuhler helped the team reach the second round of the 2010 NCAA Division III playoffs. That season, the Polar Bears averaged 32.9 points and 383.7 yards per game, scoring 29 rushing touchdowns and 19 passing touchdowns en route to a 10-2 overall record and an 8-1 mark in the OAC. In 2009, ONU averaged 35.7 points and 366.8 yards per game, with 28 rushing touchdowns and 16 passing touchdowns.
 
From 2003 to 2008, Rothenbuhler served in multiple roles at Bowling Green, including two seasons as assistant head coach and one as co-offensive coordinator. He also coached wide receivers, tight ends, and defensive ends while serving as the recruiting coordinator from 2003 to 2007. During his tenure, BGSU played in three bowl games.
 
In 2003, the Falcons went 11-3, won the MAC West with a 7-1 record, and finished No. 23 in the AP and USA Today Coaches Poll after defeating Northwestern in the Motor City Bowl. In 2004, BGSU won the GMAC Bowl, defeating Memphis and finishing 9-3. The 2007 Falcons team also reached the GMAC Bowl, finishing with an 8-5 record.
 
Rothenbuhler spent the 2002 season as the offensive coordinator at Heidelberg College.
 
His first full-time coaching role came at Arkansas State, where he spent five seasons (1997-2001) coaching tight ends and receivers.
 
He began his coaching career at Ohio State, serving as a graduate assistant in 1995 and 1996, working with quarterbacks and tight ends. From 1992 to 1994, he was a student assistant, helping with the Buckeyes’ wide receivers. During his time at OSU, the team appeared in three Citrus Bowls, a Holiday Bowl, and a Rose Bowl.
 
Rothenbuhler earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Sciences from Ohio State in 1995.
 
He and his wife, Amy, have two children, Maddy and Jake.
