Northford, Conn. / Northford Ice Pavilion - Despite holding a 44-27 advantage in shots on goal, the Robert Morris University men's hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision at Quinnipiac Friday night to fall to 1-1 on the season. The Bobcats took advantage of power plays scoring twice in six chances to get their first win of the year and move to 1-2.
While Quinnipiac went 2-6 with the man-advantage, Robert Morris scored once in nine chances despite 16 shots while playing the extra skater. Bobcat goalie Bud Fisher stopped all but the last shot that he faced, collecting a career-best 43 saves in the game.
Quinnpiac assumed the early lead with the first of two power-play goals in the game. David Marshall tipped home the goal at 11:46 on assists from Dan Travis and Dan Henningson.
The Bobcats stretched the lead to 2-0 late in the second period, this time with Travis redirecting a shot by Reid Cashman past Colonials sophomore goaltender Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Cumberland Grads) for the power-play marker. Marshall, who finished with a goal and two assists, collected a helper on the goal.
Quinnipiac tallied the third straight goal, the only even strength goal of the game, at 5:13 of the final frame. Andrew Meyer's first collegiate goal came with help from Marshall.
Sophomore forward Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bay State Breakers) broke up the shutout bid at 17:15 of the final stanza. His first goal of the season came via assists by senior Aaron Clarke (Peterborough, Ontario / Niagara University) and junior defenseman Chris Kaufman (Gig Harbor, Wash. / Helena Bighorns).
Boucher finished the contest with 24 saves. Robert Morris collected six penalties for 12 minutes while Quinnpiac was whistled 10 times for 31 minutes.
These two team's meet again Saturday, October 14, for a 7:00 p.m. game at Northford Ice Pavilion. Quinnipiac leads the all-time series, 3-1-1.
