Track and Field Compete At WVU Holiday Classic

Morgantown, W.Va. - The Robert Morris University men's and women's indoor track and field squads opened up there 2006-07 campaigns this past weekend at the West Virginia University Holiday Classic in Morgantown, WV.

The Colonials, under guidance from head coach Michael Smith performed exceptionally well at the invitational. “I felt that our team put on a solid performance,” said coach Smith. “Most of our freshmen competed very well, some just missing an opportunity to win an event or two.”

Due to the invitational status of the event there was no team scoring, but several Colonials excelled in many of the events.

In the men's weight throw, Junior Kevin Argauer (Honeoye Falls, N.Y. / Honeoye Falls) and Senior Chris Jones (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) captured first and second place with distances of 54'11.50” and 51'00”.

Senior Jeff Witmyer (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) took home first place in the men's high jump with a distance of 6'8”.

There were no first meet jitters for Freshman Kris Stalma (New Castle, Pa. / Shenango) in the 60-meter hurdles, as he finished with a time of 8.75 and the first place nod.

On the women's side, Freshmen Melitta Brown (York, Ont. / Sacred Heart) and Sara Scott (State College, Pa. / State College) both had impressive debuts. Brown picked up a distance of 16'10.75” in the women's long jump, while Scott excelled in the women's triple jump with a distance of 36'9.75”.

 

Junior Corina Campbell (Smithburg, Md. / Smithburg), Senior Christina Roadman (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville) and Junior Jordhanna White (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) put on great displays to start out the season.

Campbell finished the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.09, good enough to earn her sixth place. Roadman competed in the women's shot put with a throw of 39'9.75”, and White took part in both the long jump and triple jump finishing with distances of 16'3” and 34'6.25”.

The men's and women's track and field teams will have the next month off due to finals and the winter break, but will be back in action on January 13 when they travel to State College, Pa. for the Penn State Relays.
