RMU to Host Lean Six Sigma Healthcare Workshops This Fall

Six Sigma Connections for Healthcare and Robert Morris University's Center for Applied Research in Engineering and Science (CARES) are again teaming to offer several Lean Six Sigma Training for Healthcare workshops at RMU this fall.

Designed for healthcare and insurance professionals involved with quality improvement, risk management, care management, administration, human resources, training and other related areas, the workshops will introduce participants to the principles of Lean Six Sigma, a structured approach to the reduction of variation and waste in any process, with a specific focus on the healthcare industry. Six Sigma has been used by many healthcare organizations to reduce error rates, recognize abnormalities, improve critical thinking skills, increase patient safety, and lower costs. The organizations first offered the workshops at RMU last fall.

The following Lean Six Sigma workshops will be offered:

Lean Six Sigma Executive Orientation: Taking place Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2006, this four-hour program will provide executive-level staff members (CEOs, COOs, and VPs) a high-level overview of Lean Six Sigma and its impact upon the entire organization.

Lean Six Sigma Leadership Training: Designed for managers and directors, this all-day workshop includes material from the Executive Orientation, but provides additional details on Six Sigma tools and methods, and utilizes active experimentation to teach the basics of managing variation and waste. This program will take place Thursday, Sept. 7, 2006.

Lean Six Sigma Physician Training: Specifically targeted for physicians, this Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, workshop is eligible for continuing medical education (CME) credits and will highlight outcomes from physician-led projects.

Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Training: These sessions provide a comprehensive overview of Lean Six Sigma with the goal of providing the necessary skill-set for a student to successfully complete a Lean Six Sigma project and achieve Green Belt certification (accomplished when a student's project demonstrates continued gains for four to six months). The dates of the sessions are Monday, Sept. 11 through Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2006; Monday, Oct. 9 and Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006; Tuesday, Nov. 14 through Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006; and Wednesday, Dec. 6 and Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006.

Among the instructors for the workshops are Six Sigma Black Belt Rick Beaver, vice president of quality and safety officer for Heritage Valley Health System (HVHS) and head of Six Sigma Connections for Healthcare, a HVHS business venture that supports the integration of Lean Six Sigma into other healthcare organizations and provides a full range of education for staff, leadership, board members, and physicians, as well as RMU professor of engineering and head of the Center for Applied Research in Engineering and Science Zbigniew Czajkiewicz, Ph.D.
