Erie, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team was defeated, 6-1, by the #3-ranked Mercyhurst Lakers in a College Hockey America showdown at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa., Tuesday night.
This was the second time the Colonials have faced the Lakers in the month of October, falling, 3-0, back in the season opener on October 2, at the RMU Island Sports Center.
Mercyhurst came out of the gates firing, jumping out to a 3-0 lead early in the first period. The Lakers defense was solid, limiting the Colonials (1-6-1, 0-2-0 CHA) to only a few scoring opportunities throughout the game.
Robert Morris cut the deficit to two goals on a five-on-three power-play late in the period. Junior Alissa Dorman (Madison, Wisc. / Madison Capitals) picked up her second goal of the season off of a rebound in front of the net, set up by teammates junior Morgan Beikirch (Livonia, N.Y. / Buffalo Bison) and junior Samantha Ullrich (St. Louis, Mo. / Team Illinois U-19), at the 14:56 mark.
This was as close as the Colonials would get as Mercyhurst's Haylee McKeekin countered the score less than two minutes later with her second power-play goal of the stanza at 16:31, giving the Lakers a 4-1 edge heading into the first intermission.
The Lakers extended their lead to four late in the second period as the nation's leading scorer Meghan Agosta found the back of the net for her eleventh goal of the season on a one-timer in front of the cage at 6:02.
Agosta finalized the game with her second goal of the match midway through the third period, capitalizing on the Lakers fifth power-play of the game at 9:27.
Junior Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Oh. / Ohio Flames) started the game for RMU, playing 51:45 with 38 saves made while freshman Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) came late in the game, playing 8:15 with two saves made.
Mercyhurst out-shot Robert Morris, 46-14 while converting three of their five power-play opportunities. Robert Morris was one-for-four on the extra-man advantage.
The Colonials return home this weekend for a two-game series against the Sacred Heart Pioneers at the RMU Island Sports Center, beginning on Friday, Nov. 2, and concluding on Saturday, Nov. 3. Both games are scheduled for 7:35 p.m.
