Hamilton, N.Y. ? The Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team saw its three-game unbeaten streak come to an end Saturday evening at Starr Rink by way of a, 4-3, defeat by Colgate. The Colonials scored three of the game's final four goals, but still fell to 6-4-1 on the season, while Colgate now stands at 6-7-2.
The Red Raiders opened the game with three unanswered goals, two of which coming in the first session. Mark Anderson and Joe DeBello notched the first two goals for Colgate, while Brian Day made the score, 3-0, 39 seconds into the second period. The Colonials answered back with of goal of their own at the 10:31 mark of the second period when senior Ryan Cruthers (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Army) scored the RMU's first goal of the games. Chris Margott (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Bay State Breakers) and Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) each picked up an assist on the play.
Kevin McNamara notched the eventual game-winner at the 2:33 mark of the final period, beating freshman goalie Jim Patterson (Kamloops, B.C. / Canmore Eagles), giving Colgate a, 4-1, lead. Margott and Cruthers would each take on a tally for the Colonials in the third period, but RMU would come up one goal short falling, 4-3.
Patterson, making his first career start, took the loss for the Colonials. He made 25 saves on 29 shots. Colgate goalie Mark Dekanich stopped 25-of-28 shots he faced picking up the win.
The Colonials went 1-for-5 on the power-play and help the Radiers to 0-for-4 with the man advantage. Colgate held edge in shots, 29-28.
The two teams face-off again tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m., concluding their weekend series.
