Colonials Tame Tigers in Come From Behind Victory

Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa. ? The Robert Morris University women's ice hockey team completed their third series sweep of the season, defeating the RIT Tigers, 4-3, at the RMU Island Sports Center this afternoon. The Colonials' (9-8-1) victory marked a milestone for the young team as they moved one game over .500 for the first time in program history.

Robert Morris junior forward Kathryn Traynor (Toronto, Ontario / Toronto Jr. Aeros) led the attack, scoring two goals, while junior forward Kristen Miles (London, Ontario / London Devillettes),  sophomore defenseman Mallory Giambra (Rochester, N.Y. / Rochester Edge) and freshman forward Maria Stoa (Bloomington, Minn. / Eden Prairie) each nabbed two helpers in the come from behind win.

Junior forward Megan Picinic (Cliffside Park, N.J. / Princeton Tigerlillies) and sophomore defenseman Jacki Gibson (Burlington, Ontario / Burlington Barracudas) each added a goal.

Robert Morris fell behind early as the Tigers built a 1-0 lead just 1:06 into the first period. Amanda Klassen collected her own rebound from the right circle to beat freshman net-minder Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds) for even-strength tally.

The Tigers' offense kept the heat on going into the second period. Keltie Jones extended the advantage to 2-0, thanks to a power ?play opportunity late in the frame. Jones connected off a pass from teammate Katie Stack on the left side of the net for the chip in goal at the 17:31.

The Colonials weren't out of it just yet as Traynor brought her team within one a little over a minute later. Receiving a good feed from Miles and freshman forward Sara O'Malley (Guelph, Ontario / Hamilton Hawks), Traynor collected her own rebound in front of the net and poked it past the Tigers' goaltender for the goal with just 1:06 left to play in the frame.

RMU built upon the late score and kicked it into high gear in the third period, scoring back-to-back goals and trapping the Tigers in their own end for most of the frame. Traynor added her second of the night, rebounding in a stopped shot in front of the net to tie the game at 5:22 while Gibson sent a blast from the left point to give the Colonials a 3-2 lead at 12:05.

RIT would tie the game just 51 seconds later with a Klassen goal in front of the cage at 12:56, but it would be all the offense the team could muster up.

Robert Morris sealed the victory with nearly five minutes left to play as Picinic, with help from Miles and junior forward Morgan Beikirch (Livonia, N.Y. / Buffalo Bison), took a feed on the door step for the game-winning goal at 14:17.

Butterfield earned her third win of the season as the Colonials goaltender turned away 16 shots to keep her perfect record unblemished.

The Colonials out-shot the Tigers, 28-19, while holding them 1-8 on the extra-man advantage. RMU was 0-6.

The Colonials have the next three weeks off due to the semester break, but will back in action on Saturday, Dec. 29, and Sunday, Dec. 30, for a two-game home series against Minnesota State. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday and 1:05 p.m. on Sunday.
