Women's Lacrosse Falls to Ohio State, 15-3, in Season Opener

Moon Township, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team opened up their 2007 campaign today, falling, 15-3, to the Ohio State University Buckeyes at Joe Walton Stadium.

The Colonials (0-1) were led on offense by Sophomores Jenn Collins (Edgewater, Md. / South River), Ashley Levering (Glenwood, Md. / Glenelg) and Kara Blakeley (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine Richland) each tallying a goal a piece.

Juniors Pam Deguffroy (Irwin, Pa. / Norwin) and Emily Tomlinson (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) each recorded an assist on the afternoon.

Ohio State took to the offense early and often, opening up the game on a 6-0 run, holding the Colonials scoreless for a majority of the first half. Kara Blakeley cut into the Buckeyes lead with her first of the year off an assist from teammate Emily Tomlinson to make the score 6-1 at 14:00. The Colonial score didn't phase the visiting squad, as they closed out the half with two more scores, ending the 30 minutes session up, 8-1.

The second half opened up to a different tune with Levering and Collins finding the back of the net, 36 seconds apart to open up stanza at 16:55 and 16:29. The short momentum swing didn't last long as the Buckeyes continued on their impressive scoring trend, answering the Colonials two goals with seven of their own to close out the game, 15-3.

Robert Morris struggled in the match, playing most of the game short-handed as the team was hit with six yellow cards compared to Ohio State's one.

Ohio State's Kristen Slahor was the vocal point of the Buckeyes offense, finishing up the game with four goals and three assists for seven points in the game.

Freshman Erica Webb (Arnold, Md. / Broadneck) made her first collegiate debut in goal, making 12 saves on the afternoon.

Ohio State out-shot Robert Morris 40-13 in the game, while holding the advantage in ground balls, 23-10. The Colonials edged the Buckeyes in draw controls, 10-8.

Robert Morris wraps up the weekend hosting cross-town rival Duquesne University in a rematch of last years duel at Joe Walton Stadium on Sunday February 25 at 3:30 p.m.
