Canisius Uses Early Five-Goal Run To Defeat Women's Lacrosse, 15-9

Buffalo, N.Y. - Using a five-goal run to open up the game, the Canisius Golden Griffins held off the Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team, 15-9, this afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Sophomore Jenn Collins (Edgewater, Md. / South River) and Junior Josephine Zizic (Chicago, Ill. / Culver Academy) combined for ten points in the contest. Collins matched her goal total from her last game, scoring four goals and adding an assist while Zizic tallied two goals and three helpers.

Sophomore Ashley Levering (Glenwood, Md. / Glenelg) tallied two points with a goal and an assist while Sophomore Kara Blakeley (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine Richland) and Junior Pam DeGuffroy (Irwin, Pa. / Norwin) added a goal.

Canisius pushed aside the Colonials (2-4) early in the match, starting the game off on a five-goal run. Robert Morris snapped the scoring frenzy when Collins tallied her first of the game at the 6:43 mark. The Golden Griffins went on to score four more in the frame as Collins would add a second at 4:03 and Blakeley at 1:08. Canisius held the lead, 9-3, going into the break.

After coming out of halftime, the Colonials managed to get within five as Collins picked up her third of the game nine seconds into the second half. This would be as close as Robert Morris would get as the early five-goal run proved to be too much. Both teams traded goals from that point on, scoring six each in the second frame. RMU closed out the game with three-consecutive goals by Zizic, Collins and Levering in the final seven minutes.

On defense, Juniors Meghan Wheeler (Jordan, N.Y. / Jordan-Elbridge), Nikki Runfola (Cumming, Ga. / South Forsyth) and Sophomore Mary Kate Egan (Lynch, Md. / Kent) nabbed four ground balls each, with Robert Morris coming out on top, 27-22.

Canisius held the advantage in shots and draw controls, 32-26 and 16-10.

Freshmen duo Ashley Walsh (Fairfax Station, Va. / Lake Braddock) and Erica Webb (Arnold, Md. / Broadneck) split time in goal with both keepers making four saves a piece.

The Colonials return to action tomorrow for the second game of their New York trip as they face Niagara University on the campus of Canisius for a 5:00 p.m. showdown.
