Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Robert Morris University women's track and field team continued its 2007 outdoor season Saturday afternoon by claiming the team championship of the second annual Bennie Benson Memorial Invitational, held at RMU's Island Sports Center on Neville Island. The Colonials finished with 242.5 points, ahead of Ohio (168.50), Carnegie Mellon (81.5), Geneva (60), West Virginia (58) and West Liberty State (30.50).
A total of five Colonials claimed individual championships at the meet to help RMU claim the team championship. Sophomore Kristen Szypulski (Lower Burrell, Pa. / Burrell) won the 200-meter dash thanks to a time of 26.64, while junior Jordhanna White (West Lawn, Pa. / Wilson) claimed gold in the 100-meter hurdles thanks to a time of 15.44. White was one of three Colonials to finish in the top four in the event, as senior Brittany Humphress (Beaver, Pa. / Beaver Falls) finished second (15.76) and junior Brittany DeMudd (Warrensville Heights, Ohio / St. Peter Chanel) crossed the line in fourth (17.01).
Szypulski also finished second in the 100-meter dash thanks to crossing the finish line in a time of 13.08, while senior Ariel Allen (Aurora, Colo. / William C. Hinckley) finished second in the 400-meter dash (1:01.89).
In the field events, Humphress won the triple jump thanks to a leap of 36'9.50". Robert Morris took home each of the top three marks in the event, as freshman Sara Scott (State College, Pa. / State College) finished second with a leap of 36'8.25", while freshman Melitta Brown (York, Ontario / Sacred Heart) notched a third-place tally with a jump of 36'1.50". Elsewhere in the field events, senior Christina Roadman (Connellsville, Pa. / Connellsville) claimed the individual title in the discus with a toss of 141'2", while senior Stephanie Kuhn (Finleyville, Pa. / Ringgold) won the javelin with a throw of 160'11". Roadman also finished second in the shot put (39'5.25"), while Kuhn topped all RMU throwers in the hammer with a toss of 136'11".
Robert Morris is next in action Saturday, April 21, when it travels to West Virginia.
