RMU Scores a Team-High 10 Goals Against AIC

Springfield, Mass. ? Led by a pair of two-goal performances by freshmen Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) and Scott Kobialko (Spruce Grove, Alberta / Camrose Kodiaks), the Robert Morris University men's ice hockey team scored 10 goals en route to downing American International, 10-2, Friday night. With the victory, the Colonials improve to 8-7-2 on the season and have scored 22 goals in their last three games.

In a game that saw eight different Colonials score, RMU scored the game's first eight goals, keeping the Yellow Jackets off the board until the third period. Kobialko got things going with his second goal of the season at the 9:12 mark. Kyle Frieday (Burlington, Ontario / Oakville Blades). David Boguslawski (Cottage Grove, Minn. / Tri-City Storm) and Jason Towsley (La Salle, Ontario / Leamington Flyers) put RMU up, 3-0, just 41 seconds apart with goals at the 14:13 and 14:54 marks. Frieday, Chris Kaufman (Gig Harbor, Mich. / Helena Bighorns), Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) all tallied assists on the goals. Also senior goalie Christian Boucher (Orleans, Ontario / Cumberland Grads) picked up his second career assist on Towsley's goal.

Robert Morris scored five goals in the second period, taking an 8-0 lead into the second intermission. Urban opened the period with a goal just 1:18 in, from Sean Berkstresser (Apollo, Pa. / Pittsburgh Forge) and Longpre. Kyle Burton (Calgary, Alberta / Calgary Canucks) notched his third goal of the season at the 9:09 mark, while Kobialko scored his second of the game 2:01 later. Urban tallied his second of the period at the 13:19 mark and Tom Biondich (International Falls, Minn. / Wichita Falls  Falls Rustlers) closed out the period with a goal at the 17:32 mark of the second session.

Both of AIC's goals came 20 seconds apart in the third frame when Tom Mele and Chris Bolognino made the score, 8-2, at the 8:34 mark. Ryan Cruthers (Farmingdale, N.Y. / Army) tallied his second shorthanded goal of the season at the 13:59 mark, with Jeff Gilbert (Barrie, Ontario / Aurora Tigers) picking up the assist on the play. Brett Hopfe (Didsbury, Alberta / Olds Grizzlys) capped off the games scoring when he scored with 3:00 left in the game giving RMU a, 10-2, edge at the final buzzer.

Nine Colonials finished with two or more points, including Urban with two goals and an assist, Cruthers with one goal and two assists, Kobialko with two goals. Gilbert, Frieday, Longpre and Margott all tallied two assists, while Hopfe, Towsley and Boguslawski all tallied one goal and one assist.

Boucher tallied his eighth victory of the season stopping all 22 shots he faced through two periods. Jim Patterson (Kamloops, B.C. / Canmore Eagles) allowed two goals in the third-period, making 15 saves.

The two teams went a combined 0-for-8 on the power-play, while the Colonials outshot the Yellow Jackets, 45-39.

RMU and AIC complete its two-game series tomorrow with a 3:05 game.

Notes: The Colonials set many team records against the Yellow Jackets, including most goals scored in a game (10) and in a period with five goals in the second period ... RMU also set new period highs for assists (18) and points (28), all in the second period.
