Box Score Loretto, Pa. - The Robert Morris University football team scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to post a come-from-behind, 35-20 victory over Saint Francis in its 2008 season finale Saturday afternoon at DeGol Field.
The win settles RMU's overall record at 5-6, while its 4-3 mark in Northeast Conference play is good enough to tie for third in the conference with Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut State. The Red Flash fell to 0-10 and 0-7 in league play.
Saint Francis jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on the strength of a pair of field goals from Zak Campbell. He booted a 33-yarder with less than six minutes gone in first quarter and added a 29-yard trifecta with just 49 seconds to play in the opening period. Both field goals were set up by Robert Morris fumbles.
Senior quarterback Erik Cwalinski (Jacobsburg, Ohio / Shadyside) gave the Colonials their first lead, 7-6, early in the second quarter when he hooked up with freshman wide receiver James O'Quinn (Vandergrift, Pa. / Kiski Area) for a 64-yard touchdown pass. The drive lasted just three plays and took just 1:05 off the clock.
The Red Flash came back to take the lead, 13-7, when George Little tossed a 48-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Howze with 12:02 to play before halftime.
Touchdowns came fast and furious in the second quarter, as a total of four scores were put on the board. RMU grabbed the lead back, 14-13, when Cwalinski hit senior split end Sherrod Evers (Philadelphia, Pa. / Mastbaum Area) for a six-yard touchdown completion. However, Saint Francis was able to take a 20-14 advantage into the break when Terrance Long stepped in front of a Cwalinski pass intended for sophomore T.J. Green (Stamford, Conn. / Milford Academy) and raced 20 yards untouched to the end zone for a score on an interception.
After a scoreless third quarter, Robert Morris scored three times in the final 15 minutes thanks to miscues by Saint Francis. Red Flash quarterback Colton Sipe fumbled on 3rd-and-11 on the SFU 39-yard line, and junior defensive lineman Andy Walton (New Waterford, Ohio / Crestview) came up with the loose ball. Four plays later sophomore fullback Jeff Link (Cumberland, Md. / Allegany) scored on a two-yard touchdown plunge to give the lead back to the Colonials, 21-20.
On the ensuing kickoff, Calvin Williams coughed the ball up on a hit by freshman Joey Wines (East Liverpool, Ohio / East Liverpool), and RMU again came up with the ball. The Colonials put more points on the board off of turnovers when Cwalinski hooked up with O'Quinn for a touchdown pass for the second time on the afternoon, this time for a 43-yard score. The final score of the afternoon came with 5:11 remaining when sophomore James Snider (Newark, Del. / Valley Forge Military Academy) stripped Williams of the ball and raced 65 yards untouched to the end zone for a touchdown.
In his final collegiate game, Cwalinski finished 8-for-22 passing for 179 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, while sophomore halfback Myles Russ (Boca Raton, Fla. / West Boca) finished with 80 yards on 22 attempts. O'Quinn finished with four catches for 134 yards and two scores, while Evers caught two balls for 19 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, RMU was led by junior defensive lineman Mark Szymanski (Cadogan, Pa. / Ford City), who tied a career high with 10 tackles. Junior linebacker Ian Milanak (North Apollo, Pa. / Apollo Ridge) added nine stops, including a sack, while sophomore linebacker Nick England (Pickerington, Ohio / Pickerington Central), who earned his first college start in the place of the injured Alex DiMichele (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Sto-Rox), finished with a career-high eight takedowns.
