The Robert Morris University Colonials earned their fourth consecutive win and maintained their undefeated conference record with a 3-0 sweep over the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Sunday afternoon at the Pitt Center. Robert Morris put up a very impressive blocking performance in the win, earning 13 blocks to the Pioneers three.
The first contest remained relatively close, with RMU notching the 25-20 victory. The set ended with Robert Morris notching 14 kills to Sacred Heart's 12. However, the Colonials gained the advantage by tabbing a hitting average of .481 to the Pioneer's .125.
The Colonial's persistent defense held the Pioneers to negative hitting in the second set, leading Robert Morris to a 25-18 victory. In the third set, it was Robert Morris' explosive offense that scored the match win. As a team the Colonials grabbed another 13 kills on a .478 average.
The win was a complete team effort as all six attackers earned between five and nine kills in the win. Sophomore Charla Drabant (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton North) led the way with nine kills, while the rookie pair of Hannah Veith (Columbus, Ohio / Worthington) and Alyssa Bennett (Ramona, Calif. / Ramona) again added an identical kill total of seven put downs a piece. Sophomore Amanda Graham (Melbourne, Fla. / Eau Gallie) and seniors Emily Wolthuis (Byron Center, Mich. / South Christian) and Cassie Lee (Vista, Calif. / Vista) all added five kills to the win.
Graham led the match with nine blocks, while Bennett was not far behind adding seven. Senior libero Alaina Gibson (Muncie, Ind. / Muncie Burris) led the team in digs with eight, Lee led the match with a .556 hitting average and Bennett led the match with 28 assists.
Sacred Heart was led by Brittany Best and Maile Hetherington, who added 11 and 10 kills, respectively
The Colonials return home next week to defend their 6-0 undefeated conference record against Quinnipiac on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 4:00 p.m. and Central Connecticut State on Sunday, Nov. 16 at 3:00 p.m. A win over Quinnipiac or Central Connecticut State will guarantee the Colonials the NEC Regular Season Championship and the right to host the 2008 NEC Volleyball Championship.
