Six Goal Run Powers The Mount Past RMU, 14-9

Emmitsburg, Md. ? Mount St. Mary's used a six-goal run in the second half to break open a 6-6 game and hand the Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team a 14-9 setback in Northeast Conference action Thursday afternoon at Waldron Family Field.

The Colonials (1-6, 0-1 NEC) fought back from a 6-3 deficit in the second half with a three-goal run to tie the game. Junior Jillian Howley (East Northport, N.Y. / Northport) tickled the twine at 25:41 followed by scores from junior Kara Blakeley (Gibsonia, N.Y. / Pine Richland) and sophomore Missy Sunseri (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) at 23:57 and 20:49. Blakeley led all RMU scorers in the game with three goals and an assist.

Shortly after the Sunseri score, Mount St. Mary's gained command of the game thanks to a six-goal run that used up nearly nine minutes. Along with the scoring barrage, the Mount controlled the momentum through a 12-5 advantage in draw controls during the half.

Junior Jenn Collins (Edgewater, Md. / South River) snapped the streak with back-to-back goals at 10:17 and 9:42, but a matching effort by the Mount would make the score, 14-8.

Sophomore Alana Beck (Carle Place, N.Y. / Old Dominion) closed out the scoring with her seventh goal of the season. She finished the game with three points.

Both teams went back and forth through the first half with the Mount jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes. Howley tied the game at 23:47 only to see the home team score the next two goals to take a 3-1 advantage. Blakeley cut the lead to one with her first goal at the midway point, while adding a second after a Mount score at 8:08 to take a 4-3 deficit into halftime.

Sophomore Erica Webb (Arnold, Md. / Broadneck) stopped ten shots in net while Pittsburgh-native Jane Karger recorded the victory with seven saves.

Mount St. Mary's held the advantage in shots, 34-29, and ground balls, 25-21.

Robert Morris wraps up its two game road swing this weekend on Saturday, March 22 at Wagner. Game time is set for noon.
