Bemidji State Hands Robert Morris 2-0 loss

Box Score

Pittsburgh, Pa.  ? Jan. 2, 2009 ? The Robert Morris University Colonials were outshot 41 to 18, which led to a 2-0 loss to the Bemidji State Beavers on Friday evening at the Robert Morris Island Sports Center. The win marks the Beavers second win of the season, as they improve to 2-15-2, while the Colonials drop to 8-10-1.

The first period remained quiet with no scoring and only one power-play. Robert Morris managed to fire off only two shots to the Beaver's eight.

Bemidji started off the second period attacking the RMU net. Three different Beavers fired shots at RMU goalie Brianne McLaughlin (Sheffield Village, Ohio / Ohio Flames) from various directions, but the senior goalie's quick reflexes prevented the score.

At 3:33 in the second, during a power-play, the Beavers went on the attack again. Junior Ashley Leopold fired a shot that bounced off the post and freshman Erin Babineau picked up the rebound and flipped it up to the upper left corner of the net to gain the 1-0 advantage. Leopold and freshman Kaylee Keys were awarded with the assists.

Despite a five-minute power-play opportunity for the Colonials, the Bemidji State defense was able to keep the net secure and maintain their one goal lead.

After two periods, McLaughlin racked up 20 saves to Bemidji goalie Zuzana Tomcikova's eight and BSU had three power-play opportunities, while Robert Morris had two.

The Beavers added another goal to their collection at 8:37 in the third period when sophomore Lexy Parenteau slipped the puck past McLaughlin for her first goal of the season.  Junior Nicole Rawlings and sophomore Carissa Ketcher added the assists.

The Colonials took one final charge at Bemidji's net in the last couple minutes of action, putting off their largest streak of shots, but unfortunately nothing fell.

McLaughlin finished the game with an impressive 39 save performance and marks her seventh 30 plus save game, while Tomcikova ended the game with 18. Bemidji State was one of four on power-play opportunities, while RMU was zero for six.

Robert Morris returns to the RMU Island Sports Center tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. to face Bemidji State in the second game of the series.
