Blue Devils Double Up Colonials, 42-21

Box Score

New Britain, Conn. - Josue Paul opened the second half by returning a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and Central Connecticut State scored 29 points in the second half en route to a 42-21 win over the Robert Morris University football team Saturday at Arute Field.

The Blue Devils improved to 4-1 on the 2009 campaign, including 2-0 in Northeast Conference play, while the Colonials dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in league action.

RMU took an early 7-0 lead after the opening kickoff when freshman quarterback Jeff Sinclair (Natrona Heights, Pa. / Highlands) capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive by scoring from a yard out.

Junior halfback Myles Russ (Boca Raton, Fla. / West Boca) was the key catalyst on offense on the game's first possession, as he scampered for 17 yards on the first play from scrimmage and later added a 36-yard run.

Central Connecticut State took a 13-7 lead thanks to a pair of touchdowns by Brian Fowler, the first on a nine-yard reception from Blue Devil quarterback Hunter Wanket and the other on a one-yard plunge at the 8:52 mark of the second quarter.

Robert Morris was able to strike quickly after Fowler's second touchdown of the afternoon to take a 14-13 advantage.

Sophomore Anthony Coleman (Cheltenham, Md. / St. John's) gave the Colonials good field position by returning the kickoff 24 yards to the RMU 44-yard line. On the first play of the drive Russ posted a 30-yard run, and on the next play Sinclair hooked up with sophomore tight end Shadrae King (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport) for a 26-yard touchdown pass.

The Colonials held the one-point advantage at halftime, but Paul put CCSU back in front with a 95-yard kickoff return for a score to open the second half. James Mallory converted the two-point conversion to put the Blue Devils up, 21-14.

The score remained that way until the fourth quarter, when Robert Morris began to drive and reached the CCSU red zone before suffering a crucial fumble. On 2nd-and-goal from the Blue Devil 9-yard line, senior quarterback Camdin Crouse (Snow Shoe, Pa. / Bald Eagle), pressed into action due to an injury to Sinclair, received a low snap from sophomore center Sam Miller (Washington, Pa. / Washington) while in the shotgun. Ricardo Gibson pounced on the loose ball for the fumble recovery to give possession back to Central Connecticut State.

The Blue Devils responded by marching 85 yards on nine plays to increase their lead to 28-14 when Wanket hit Rob Fisher with a 40-yard touchdown pass with 4:17 remaining.

Three more touchdowns were scored in final two minutes of action, as Fowler scored his third touchdown of the game with a 66-yard scoring run, while Crouse completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to King with 1:16 to play to make it 35-21 in favor of Central Connecticut State.

Kevin Woolfolk completed the game's scoring with a 42-yard touchdown run for the Blue Devils with 56 seconds to go. Fowler finished with 159 yards rushing on 19 carries for CCSU, while Mallory also eclipsed the 100-yard rushing plateau with 113 yards on 23 attempts.

Russ notched his third 100-yard rushing game of the year with 135 yards on 16 carries, while King finished with career high totals in receptions (9) and receiving yards (110).

Sinclair finished 7-for-14 passing for 72 yards and a touchdown but was picked off twice, while Crouse completed eight of his nine passes for 101 yards and a touchdown in relief of Sinclair.

Junior linebacker Elias Navarro (Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / South Plantation) took home game-high honors in tackles with 18, while senior safety Michael Landers (Springdale, Pa. / Springdale) finished with 13 stops and junior linebacker Alex DiMichele (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Sto-Rox) 11 takedowns.

Robert Morris returns home to Joe Walton Stadium Saturday, Oct. 17, to host in-state rival Saint Francis for a Noon kickoff in a game that will be televised live on FSN Pittsburgh.
