New Britain, Conn. - Josue Paul opened the second half by returning a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and Central Connecticut State scored 29 points in the second half en route to a 42-21 win over the Robert Morris University football team Saturday at Arute Field.
The Blue Devils improved to 4-1 on the 2009 campaign, including 2-0 in Northeast Conference play, while the Colonials dropped to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in league action.
RMU took an early 7-0 lead after the opening kickoff when freshman quarterback Jeff Sinclair (Natrona Heights, Pa. / Highlands) capped a nine-play, 75-yard drive by scoring from a yard out.
Junior halfback Myles Russ (Boca Raton, Fla. / West Boca) was the key catalyst on offense on the game's first possession, as he scampered for 17 yards on the first play from scrimmage and later added a 36-yard run.
Central Connecticut State took a 13-7 lead thanks to a pair of touchdowns by Brian Fowler, the first on a nine-yard reception from Blue Devil quarterback Hunter Wanket and the other on a one-yard plunge at the 8:52 mark of the second quarter.Â
Robert Morris was able to strike quickly after Fowler's second touchdown of the afternoon to take a 14-13 advantage.
Sophomore Anthony Coleman (Cheltenham, Md. / St. John's) gave the Colonials good field position by returning the kickoff 24 yards to the RMU 44-yard line. On the first play of the drive Russ posted a 30-yard run, and on the next play Sinclair hooked up with sophomore tight end Shadrae King (McKeesport, Pa. / McKeesport) for a 26-yard touchdown pass.
The Colonials held the one-point advantage at halftime, but Paul put CCSU back in front with a 95-yard kickoff return for a score to open the second half. James Mallory converted the two-point conversion to put the Blue Devils up, 21-14.
The score remained that way until the fourth quarter, when Robert Morris began to drive and reached the CCSU red zone before suffering a crucial fumble. On 2nd-and-goal from the Blue Devil 9-yard line, senior quarterback Camdin Crouse (Snow Shoe, Pa. / Bald Eagle), pressed into action due to an injury to Sinclair, received a low snap from sophomore center Sam Miller (Washington, Pa. / Washington) while in the shotgun. Ricardo Gibson pounced on the loose ball for the fumble recovery to give possession back to Central Connecticut State. Â
The Blue Devils responded by marching 85 yards on nine plays to increase their lead to 28-14 when Wanket hit Rob Fisher with a 40-yard touchdown pass with 4:17 remaining.
Three more touchdowns were scored in final two minutes of action, as Fowler scored his third touchdown of the game with a 66-yard scoring run, while Crouse completed a 30-yard touchdown pass to King with 1:16 to play to make it 35-21 in favor of Central Connecticut State.
