Robert Morris Drops Close Decision in OT

Big Rapids, Mich. - On Friday night, the Robert Morris University men's hockey team traveled to the campus of Ferris State University to take on the Bulldogs at Ewigleben Ice Arena.  Heading into the third period down two goals, the Colonials rallied to tie the game at four all and send the game into overtime play.  But only thirty seconds into the OT period, Ferris State scored the game winner to squeak out the 5-4 win.

The Bulldogs got on the board early when Blair Riley tallied his first of the night only 32 seconds into the contest.

But the Colonials got right back with their first goal as Chris Kushneriuk (Ottawa, Ontario / Wayne State) lit the lamp with his first of the season at 14:56 of the first period.  Junior Denny Urban (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Ohio Blue Jackets) picked up his fourth point of the year with the assist.

Robert Morris kept on rolling as they netted their second goal of the night thanks to a power play goal from sophomore Cody Crichton (Palgrave, Ontario / Brampton Capitals).  Forwards Ron Cramer (New Wilmington, Pa. / Indiana Ice) and Scott Kobialko (Spruce Grove, Alberta / Camrose Kodiaks) recorded helpers on the goal that sent RMU into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.

But in the second, the Bulldogs would battle back with two goals early in the period.  Riley tallied a short hander at 6:27 while Aaron Lewicki notched his second of the year to give Ferris State a 3-2 advantage.

Early in the second, FSU continued their scoring frenzy with a fourth goal from Casey Haines on the power play at the 5:07 mark.

Not ready to give up, Robert Morris stormed back two goals of their own to deadlock the game once more.  At 7:27 of the second, sophomore Furman South (Sewickley, Pa. / Bay State Breakers) recorded the first goal of his career, and his third point in three games to bring the Colonials within one.  Senior Dave Cowan (Calgary, Alberta / Olds Grizzlys) and Cramer had the assists on South's goal.

Shorthanded and with under five minutes to play, Kushneriuk put the biscuit in the basket for the second time of the night at 15:51.  Sophomore James Lyle (Nepean, Ontario / Smiths Falls Bears) tallied his first point of the year with the assist.

With the score tied at four, the contest proceeded into a five minute overtime.  But much like the game started, FSU's Haines grabbed a quick score 37 seconds in to win, 5-4.

Ferris State put 47 shots on goal while the Colonials managed 28.  RMU also went one-for-seven on the power play.

Sophomore Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) made his third start of the year between the pipes and stopped 42 shots.

The Colonials (1-2-0 ; 0-0-0 CHA) will attempt to to knock off the Bulldogs again tomorrow when they play their second contest of the weekend at 5:05 p.m.
