Colonials Shutout by Syracuse, 4-0

Box Score Pittsburgh, Pa. - Nov. 20, 2009 - Despite outshooting the Syracuse Orange 32 to 23, the Robert Morris University Colonials fell to the Syracuse Orange in a 4-0 shutout on Friday evening at the RMU Island Sports Center. The loss drops the Colonials to 4-8-1 overall and 0-2-1 in CHA, while Syracuse improves to 5-5-1 overall and 2-1-0 in league play.

The two teams fought through the majority of the first period with neither team scoring, but Syracuse was finally able to get a score on the board at 11:31 during a power-play. Lisa Mullan sent the puck the Holly Carrie-Mattimoe, who was waiting by the left side of the net and found an opening past junior goalie Daneca Butterfield (Kronau, Saskatchewan / Notre Dame Hounds). Isabel Menard was credited with the second assist.

The Orange went on a scoring surge in the second period to grab the dominating 4-0 win. Just 1:32 into the period Mullen found a rebound and sent it into the net to give Syracuse a 2-0 lead. Kylie Klassen and Mattimo grabbed the helpers on the play.

The next 12 minutes remained scoreless, but the Orange's Menard scored her second goal of the contest to give Syracuse a three goal cushion with Mattimoe once again assisting on the play.

With the clock winding down, Syracuse added another goal to their collection when Mullan sent the puck through Butterfield's five-hole. Mattimoe had a hand in all of Syracuse's goals by earning her third assist of the contest on the play. Brittany Maschmeyer also added an assist.

Robert Morris totaled 15 shots in the third period to Syracuse's five, but neither team was able to find the net, finalizing the score at 4-0.

Syracuse goalie Lucy Schoedel registered 32 saves in the contest, while the RMU duo of Butterfield and Kristen DiCiocco (Niagara Falls, Ontario / Stoney Creek Jr. Sabres) added 19 saves. Syracuse went two-for-five on the power-play, while Robert Morris was unsuccessful on four attempts.

The Colonials take on Syracuse in game two of the series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at the RMU Island Sports Center.
