Colonials Battle Chargers to 2-2 Decision

Pittsburgh, Pa. – After a nine day hiatus, the Robert Morris University men's hockey team returned to the ice to take on CHA rival, Alabama-Huntsville.  Both the Colonials and the Chargers played aggressive from the opening puck drop with UAH netting two quick goals early in the first period.  However, RMU held on strong as they scored a game tying goal in the third to deadlock, 2-2.

At 6:39 of the first, the Chargers took an early one goal lead with an opening score from David Nicoletti thanks to a five-on-three advantage.  Still on the power play after the first score, the Chargers immediately tacked on another to take a 2-0 lead with Andrew Colburn's marker at 7:05.

Finally with under two minutes left in the first period, junior Nathan Longpre (Peterborough, Ontario / Mahoning Valley Phantoms) put the Colonials on the board with a power play goal at 18:13.  Assists on Longpre's seventh of the year were awarded to line mates Scott Kobialko (Spruce Grove, Alberta / Camrose Kodiaks) and Trevor Lewis (Lititz, Pa. / Syracuse Stars).

Still down 2-1, Robert Morris spent the majority of the second period on a power play as UAH picked up three minors and one major penalty. However, despite notching 15 shot attempts in second, the Colonials came up empty handed.  Shots at the end of two were 24-17 in favor of RMU.

On their eighth power play opportunity of the night, Kobialko came through with a game tying goal to lock the game at two.  Midway through the third, Kobialko recorded his sixth of the season from Chris Kushneriuk (Ottawa, Ontario / Wayne State) and Longpre.

For the remainder of regulation, both teams continued to swarm the nets, but neither could come up with a third goal.  With the game at two-all, the Chargers and Colonials headed to a five-minute overtime.

Robert Morris tallied nine shots in OT, while UAH recorded three as neither team could break the tie.  The game concluded with shots 48-23, RMU.

Sophomore Brooks Ostergard (Chagrin Falls, Ohio / Bay State Breakers) made 21 saves in his second tie decision of the 2009-10 season.

The Colonials, now 3-9-2 and 1-3-2 in the CHA, will tangle with the Chargers again tomorrow night in Clearview Arena at 7:05 p.m.
