Fairfield, Conn. ? April 3, 2009 ? The Robert Morris University women's lacrosse team tallied a season low four goals in a 15-4 defeat to the Sacred Heart Pioneers on Friday afternoon at Campus Field. All four Colonial goals came in the first-half of play and Kara Blakeley (Gibsonia, Pa. / Pine-Richland) was the only Colonial to notch multiple goals in the loss with two.
The loss brings the Colonials to a 1-2 in NEC play and 5-6 overall, while Sacred Heart remains undefeated in league play at 3-0 and 6-5 overall.
Senior Emily Tomlinson (Springfield, Va. / West Springfield) and freshman Courtney Sicinski (Downington, Pa. / Downington West) were the only other two RMU players who found the net in the defeat. Sicinski also added an assist for two points.
Sacred Heart started off the game with three goals within the first 1:16. Alicia Fuchs scored first and then Carissa Hauser scored back-to-back goals to give the Pioneers a 3-0 head start. Hauser proved to be a struggle for the Colonials for the remainder of the game, as she racked up six total goals before the end of play.
At 2:09 Blakeley put the Colonials on the board by beating Sacred Heart goalie Chelsea Wagner. However, the Pioneers responded less than two minutes later to bring the score to 4-1.
With 24:45 left on the clock Tomlinson and Sicinski scored a goal each within one minute of each other to cut into the Pioneers lead 4-3. This ended up being the closest score the game ever saw.
The Pioneers scored four more goals before the end of the half, while the Colonials netted one goal to set the score at 8-4 heading into the second half.
The Colonial defense was able to hold off the Pioneer attack for over five minutes at the beginning of the second-half, but at 5:11 Kate Kmiotek found the back of the Colonial net, which started a string of seven unanswered Pioneer goals to end the game 15-4 in Sacred Heart's favor.
The Colonials will look to bounce back on Sunday, April 5 when they head to Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on Long Island at 11:00 a.m.
